After watching Latin Madness in April, 2001, I was very curious about the choreography from the various dance companies, so Jai and Candy took the time to answer my many questions back in July...

Hi Rose, it is nice to see someone else appreciating the hard work and unified dancing brought by Latin Madness... Although it is making a comeback in October, I feel a lot of people put it in the back of their minds due to the lack of articles and such. Anyway, here is some info on our choreography and answers to your questions.

1. How did you feel about being part of the Show?

Jai & Candy: It was the most exciting experience for us both. We have been involved in many events but Latin Madness was one of the best.

2. Would you do it again?

Jai & Candy: The question should read when will you do it again. The tentative date is October 2. It will run for 10 days.

3. What would you change, if anything?

Jai & Candy: There were many things now that when we look back we would do differently, however, with an experiment like Latin Madness, (because the outcome was in God's hands at all times) we feel that everything in the moment was perfect for the tremendous love and respect the cast felt.

4. How long have you been dancing? Is it your full-time job?

Jai & Candy: Jai -- 3 years 2 months and Candy -- 2 years 9 months. This is only one of our full time jobs.

5. Who did you train with in the past?

Jai -- Eddie Torres
Candy -- Ismael Otero and Eddie Torres

6. Do you have any other types of training (i.e. jazz) that you utilize in
your choreography?

Jai & Candy: No.

7. What was the background or inspiration for your piece.

Jai & Candy: Wild Wild West video by Will Smith.

Salsa y Sabor is an early to mid 20th century routine with an original zoot suit and a feathered bustier to match. It is a high leveled dance number with tricks, spits, turn patterns, and shines. It is a battle of sorts. It shows the grace and skill of the pachuco dancer and the complexity and femininity of the sophisticated damsel. Towards the end, it details spin after spin until the final spin to the knees and the female hip flick knock out.

8. Where do you see Mambo/Salsa in the next 10 years.

Jai & Candy: We tend to think a bit more in the moment but hopefully, all will go well and events like Latin Madness will open doors for Broadway and the like.

9. To help Toronto and other dancers who learned to dance Salsa "on 1", can
you give me your thoughts on why you prefer dancing "on 2".

Jai & Candy: Because as Cuben Pete once said, "Dancing "on one" is dancing "to" the music. Dancing "on 2" is dancing "in" the music." Who doesn't want to dance in the music?

10. Anything you'd like to add that I didn't think of.

Jai & Candy: Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to keep Latin Madness and the great buzz alive. We look forward to seeing you all and dancing for you all in
Latin Madness round 2.
