  Welcome to Salsa!

Welcome to a world of emotional Latin music, breathtaking usually sensual body movements which can sweep you away to another world in which you may never want to leave... If you recently begun dancing, or do not know what salsa is and want to check out what the fuss is about, keep reading...

In brief, salsa is a social partner dance, danced to salsa music. It is often danced in Latin night clubs that play a lot of salsa music, along with a mix of bachata, merengue and cumbia. Within the last decade, salsa has gained tremendous popularity throughout the world, and you can now dance salsa in almost any major city you travel to. It has grown so big that there are now many large salsa conventions held each year in various cities. For some dancers, salsa is a hobby, for others, it is a way of life.

Is salsa for me? How would I start?

Dancing is for absolutely anyone, young and old, busy lifestyle or not. If you do not dance, but have already been to a salsa club or seen salsa dancing and believe you may like it, why not take some lessons. If you have never seen salsa before and are curious, you may want to check out your local salsa clubs or dance schools to see some dancing. For many dancers, the love for the dance came only after they started dancing. You may not know how you truly feel until you try it.

Different dancers dance for different reasons -- for the love of the music, the exercise, the physical challenge of learning to dance, or the social atmosphere. Some begin with previous dance experience, others with none. For many, salsa is a great improvement from the "usual" popular dance clubs since many people go solely for the purpose of dancing, not for the usual pick-up scene. Ladies can safely go on their own and it is accepted (sometimes expected) to ask men for a dance!

If you believe you have two left feet and this is not for you, you may be missing out on a lot of fun. Most dancers need to take lessons to learn how to dance. Many great dancers started out without any dancing ability whatsoever and having absolutely no rhythm (that they know of). We know it can sometimes be an intimidating experience as a beginner, but remember everyone has started this way! You will be in good company in a beginner salsa class. Most people do not have a partner when they start dancing, so no more excuses!

If you live in Toronto, you can check out the following salsa clubs, inquire about salsa classes, and attend some salsa events. Maybe one day you'll even become part of a salsa dance group.
