Since
I was busy making sure everything was running smoothly, it was difficult
for me to tell if it was a success. As an organizer, you don't really
have time to enjoy it especially since it was jam-packed full of lessons
and shows; but many dancers have told us what a great time they had.
What even made it more amazing was being able to pull it off in 1-1/2
weeks. We had already booked the studio, but with the all the events
happening in and around Toronto, we didn't have a chance to start planning!
We knew what we needed to do but hadn't had a moment to breathe! In
a way, it was an advantage to start so late as the instructors already
knew upfront whether they were available or not. Regarding the shows,
it was quite the juggling act as we decided to showcase couples who
not only perform salsa, but include other forms of dance which could
influence salsa.
At
7:15 pm, we started off with a cha cha class with Sasha Tahiliani (right)
which was a success as we had over 100 dancers show up early to take
his class!
Then
at about 8 pm, Teddy and Stephanie of United Salseros were teaching
a salsa turn pattern for the next half hour. During this time, I was
at the door and dancers were coming in non-stop until about 8:45 pm
when the social dancing started. At this time, I had a chance to breathe
and quickly stole a dance with Ziv, my partner from TOsalsa.com, Teddy
of United Salseros and then to show my mom something totally different,
I grabbed Caryl Cuizon to lead me in a dance. It was the first time
my parents have had a chance to really see what the salsa scene is all
about; and thank goodness I had them there cause I don't know how I
could have gone through the night without their help!
The social dancing went on until about 9:45 pm as many of the dancer/performers
were either teaching or practicing with their groups until about 9-9:30
pm, so we couldn't start until they had a chance to prepare and warm
up.
Rene Delgado (United Salseros) started off by introducing himself and
then talked about why we started Fiesta Productions and the "Fiesta
Fever" Social. Then I took over and talked a little about myself
and introduced the dance instructors, DJs and all the promoters. You
could say the highlights for most dancers (myself included) was probably
seeing for the first time all the salsa dance instructors in one room
with many regulars who loves to dance salsa, and the webmasters of 3
Toronto salsa dance websites all in one room! We are probably the only
city in the world to have 3 salsa dance sites to talk about salsa events
in Toronto (that are unrelated to dance groups). We
also had a visit from the Puentes
Brothers who were in town and dropped by to check out our dancing.
In
the first set of performances, we featured various dances which may
influence salsa. The first couple to perform was Andy Kamienski and
Sharon from St. Catharines who were showing us Salon Style Argentine
Tango, which is a social dance in Argentina versus the flashy Argentine
Show Tango which was performed by Alberto Gomez and Anna (left).
We then had a fun demo from Gordon Beckles and his partner Marina
on Latin Hustle. He totally surprised us by telling us he was 42! and
most of us would have thought he was in his late twenties or early thirties
-- he looked that good! And then we closed the first set with Bong
Gonzales and Trionne Moore who performed a Salsa. They just won
the the 2001 Detroit Star Ball Salsa Championship; and unfortunately
could not show their winning routine since parts of it was going to
be re-used in the Berlin competition. You can click
here to see all the great pics from that amazing and fun-filled
weekend in Detroit!
We
then had about half an hour of dancing before the next set of performances.
Originally, Inessa was supposed to perform a cha cha with her partner,
but unfortunately, he couldn't make it so we quickly asked Jason
Ng and his partner, Sylvia, to fill in. Considering they were asked
last-minute, they did a fabulous performance! In case you didn't know,
Jason Ng is a pre-championship amateur ballroom dancer (that's the level
after bronze, silver and gold); and since he got involved in salsa about
1-1/2 years ago, he's been a United Salsero volunteer and a member of
the Los Salsamanos Dance Company. He also won third place Amateurs in
the 2000 Berlin dance competition last year.
He is one of the few salsa dancers I know who has trained in International
Standard and Latin Ballroom for 7 years with Jeff Henson, Violetta,
Jitka Bouma, Sylvain and Tanya Cardinal, Stephane Jacque and Isabelle
Farand; and Brian Torner. I still remember bumping into him for the
first time at a ballroom show with two of my all-time favourite American
Rhythm Champions, Bob Powers & Julia Gorchakova. We danced a rumba and
he blew me away with his fabulous rumba hip action!
As
I watched them practice to another song while we were waiting for his
song to down-load to my computer; Caryl was giving him a gentle "if
looks could kill" and Angus as the music coordinator kept apologizing
and saying how "another song" would be amazing for the show!
At that time, I didn't realize how important the song was to their performance
as it was kept a secret from all of us. Well, I have to say, I was totally
surprised and blown away by the calibre of their routine! It had the
look and feel of a performance at a dance convention -- with only a
week-and-a-half to put it all together!
Their intro is very flirtatious with both of them dancing separately
from each other with Angus as a waiter coming over to the table to where
Caryl was sitting -- and they decide to have a dance. After about two
minutes, Rene walks up to Angus, taps him on the shoulder to remind
him he's a waiter and has a job to do. Caryl is left standing on the
dancefloor until Oscar comes up to her, then Caryl follows Oscar off
the dance floor. What was hilarious was that Oscar did it so naturally,
some dancers didn't realize it was part of the show and thought Oscar
just decided to go up and join in on the Act since Caryl looked like
she was left stranded!
Then it was time for Stephanie Gurnon of United Salseros and Oren Shoshan,
a dance instructor originally from Toronto (who taught in North Carolina),
to perform a Salsa. At the time, they were one of the finalists in the
Pro Division of the 2001 Berlin Dance Competition and as of the writing
of this feature, I'm proud to say they won 1st place!
Due
to time constraints and their practices for the Berlin Competition,
their routine was more a Demonstration. It started with Oren leading
Stephanie, then Pawel leading Oren.
And then we had one final surprise performance by Oscar Naranjo
and Anna (who danced tango with Alberto Gomez earlier). Oscar
has been dancing for about 10 years in Toronto, won numerous dance
contests over the years, was one of the original principal dancers
with Strickly Salsa, and is considered by many, including myself,
to be one of the best dancers for showmanship. Any girl who's into
doing tricks, loves dancing with him as he will not do the trick unless
you're totally safe and he will not attempt a trick unless he feels
you can handle it because you don't always know when it's coming.
He's also one of the few dancers who can execute these moves on a
crowded floor too!
What
made this performance interesting was that he was executing lifts and
tricks that I've never seen him do in the regular clubs.
After that, we ended the night with social dancing and the draw for
the Eliades Ochoa concert tickets and CD giveaways.
I'd like to take the opportunity to thank all the instructors, performers
and everyone who came out to support us at our first Social, including:

thru Life -- Peter Djakovic

Strickly Salsa.
What
Others had to Say About the Event

Hi Rene, I just wanted to say congratulations on a great Latin event.
We need more events that focus on the dancing and provide dancers with
a healthy (ie. non-smoking and not too loud) environment to dance. The
readily available water was also an unexpected bonus and it was great
to have all the salsa teachers there. Also, contrary to what you said
about yourself you seem to be a great speaker ! :) Veronika - UofT Ballroom

Hi Rose, Great to finally meet you. I had a fantastic time on Sunday.
Thanks for the invite. Looking forward to the next Social. A thought
for the next one - I spoke to a few people that attended and we think
that a Friday or Saturday may be a better day to hold it as we can make
it a later night and not have to worry as much about the next morning.
Perhaps you could take a poll of those that attended and go from there
(assuming that the studio is free on those days). Have a great one and
looking forward to seeing you at one of the clubs. Best wishes, George

Greetings. Want to take the opportunity to send a big shout-out/congratulations
to Rose and Rene (and all the other who helped) for the fabulous "Fiesta
Fever Social" last night. The vibe was right, the special performances
were a revelation, and it was a lot of fun to be part of the team. More
please, DJ Billy Bryans

Hello everyone, this message is for Rose. How is everything? I know
I missed you again on Tuesday at Berlin so I did not get the opporutnity
to tell you personally how sorry I am that I missed out on your party
this weekend. Unfortunately, our dance classes finished a lot later
than was expected, being the second week we had a lot of new people
still registering and asking questions. By the time everyone finally
left the studio and we cleaned up it was well past 10:30pm. We figured
that by the time we changed, and drove over you would be packing up
yourself. I hope everything worked out well for you guys.
A
lot of our clients attended your social and reported good things, congratulations.
I know it's a lot of hard work and your success is well deserved. Thank
you for your invitation, I guarantee that I won't miss the next social/event
that you are hosting.
