Spain’s
greatest flamenco guitarist and his world-famous ensemble
of dancers, singers and musicians, bring to life the
intoxicating rhythms and sounds of Andalucia with
blazing bursts of passionate improvisation and exhilarating
virtuosity.
Excerpts
from his website...
" Flamenco consists of three elements: singing,
dance and guitar music. The most important element
of flamenco for Spaniard is singing, for tourists
visiting south of Spain dance, for guitarist guitar
music - and for me Paco Pena ;-)...
Paco Pena has received several awards. In 1983, he
won the Ramon Montoya Prize for the Best Concert Guitarist.
In 1997, he got "La Cruz de Oficial de la Orden
del Merito Civil" from King of Spain...
Paco
Pena represents traditional - as opposed to modern
- trend in flamenco guitar music. Although his art
is deeply based on musical tradition of Andalusia,
he is one of the most original guitarists in whole
history. ... Large part among brilliant melodic phrases
performed by him have their sources in far past. Flamenco
it is a musical folklore, which in the past - as opposed
to classical music - was not written down in score
form. Melodic phrases were hand down from generation
onto generation exclusively in practical way. Thus,
in most of cases origin melodic phrases of flamenco
music is anonymous. Of course, we guess that great
masters created the most of them; however, in the
most of cases it is difficult to point univocally
their authors. These phrases, improving by artists
of many generations, achieve their artistic culminant
point in interpretations of present guitarists. Paco
Pena is here a matchless master.
