My First Ballroom Competition at Can-Am Dancesport

These are pictures of me dancin' away at Can Am.

Talk about pressure! Being primarily a salsa dancer for about four years and then competing in Latin ballroom, I had to get use to those judges not missing a thing... from leg and foot action, leg extensions, hip action, timing and rhythm... .those judges look for everything.

I was on a "dancer's high' the entire weekend----the adrenalin rush from your own ‘heats' of competition, the rush and anxiety watching your competitors and the unbelievable ‘disbelief' in watching the professionals dance like it was effortless. They would draw you into the glamour of their dance. Your could feel the emotions of others in the room and smell the excitement in the air.

Judges are all past professional winners/officials and are well know in the industry. They included Toronto's own Jitka Bouma and Brigitt Mayer, as well as others such as Brian Torner, Marianne Nicole, Wendy Johnson and, of course, Sam Sodano who is organizer for the well-known Ohio Star Ball Championships which airs on PBS every year.

I found the whole competition not only entertaining, but a great learning tool through watching the professionals, other competitors and judges. What I did like was on the final day the judges provided workshops on what they look for in the dancers. In terms of dancing. I really enjoyed watching the mambo routines, especially since we all know mambo is on the "2", and I still find it challenging considering I dance salsa on the "1". The rumba and cha cha are also my favourites.

Hope you enjoy the pictures
