Great Salsa Songs to Dance To... (2nd Edition)

Since
I published my first list in late December, it's been one of the most
popular pages of our website, along with my growing Top 10 Great Songs
List. In a way, I was surprised and yet in other ways, I wasn't, as
many dancers found this so helpful.
What I
didn't realize at the time was how "commercial" some of the
salsa music was and I was missing some of the great songs and bands
that existed 30 years ago and some are still going strong, such as "El
Gran Combo". So this list may still have some "commercial"
feel to it as new albums are coming out all the time or I forgot about
some other songs which I just found out the name to; but I tried my
best to branch out to the classics, by talking to various DJ's, asking
them what great song(s) they were playing and by surfing the various
latin music websites to listen to music clips of "classic"
artists. What also helped open my eyes over the past few months was
spending time in New York and in Puerto Rico to hear and dance to the
fabulous music played there.
Not too long ago, DJ Alvaro played a fabulous salsa entitled "Distincto
y Differente" by an artist I never heard of before, Justo Betancourt,
recorded on vinyl in 1977! That had to be one of the funkiest songs
to dance to; or how about "La Fiesta de Pilito" by El Gran
Combo which was on their 30th Anniversary Album.
