Valentine's Day Salsa Love Songs for Lovers
and
Anti-Valentine's Day Songs for Broken Hearts
by Freddy Paiz and Rose Knows
(February 2002)

Thanks to another salsa "lover", Freddy Paiz (who volunteers for United Salseros and has been chosen for Salsa Team Canada), I originally asked him to help pick out great romantic songs in honour of Valentine's Day since my original list last year wasn't necessarily truly "romantic". The music was "romantic" to dance to, but the lyrics didn't necessarily reflect the mood.

So one night via telephone, we had a long and hilariously funny music session picking out our favourite songs and he had a hard time ranking them. He even translated some of the lyrics for me so you can have an understanding of what the song is truly about. I was truly shocked to find out what some of these songs are talking about -- hope you enjoy this as much as we did...

PS You can even use these songs to play over the phone into that special someone's voicemail box to tell them how you feel about them... especially when they can't get it!

Romantic Valentine's Day Songs

Anti-Valentine's Day Songs

1 Me Tiene Loco (She's Driving Me Crazy) - Puerto Rican Power
This song is great to dance to and the lyrics are perfect because he's talking about how totally in love he is with his woman who's driving him nuts, and all he does is think about her... her beauty, "whenever she looks at me, she ties me up in knots".

4 Que Mas Tu Quieras De Mi

"We explode everytime we are about to give a kiss and we play footsie underneath the table..."

6 Pena de Amor (The Pain of Love) - Puerto Rican Power
This song is about a guy-friend who tells the woman that she's got to learn how to forget about her ex-boyfriend; OR it's her boyfriend who's reminding her to get over her old boyfriend.
7 Bombon de Azucar (Lollipop with Sugar) - Charlie Cruz
A totally happy love song -- "He couldn't believe how his life has changed now that she is part of his life".

- Eddie Santiago

If you want it now, play this song...

Our Ultimate No. 1 Romantica Song in Bachata...

Mi Todo (My All) - Dominicanada

The ultimate love song which everyone wants to dance to... interpreted as you are my everything... "I'm drowning and I can't live without you... I cannot live without your body next to me"...

Note: Honourable Mention could go to "Hoja en Blanco by Monchi y Alexandra", but the words are not nearly as romantic as our all-time favourite bachata.

February 10, 2003 -- anti-valentine's day songs

I liked your selections, but I think anything by La India deserves about 1 to 35 on the anti-valentine's day list. judgeing by her music, she must have had her heart ripped out about a million times -- Brian

February 12, 2002 - Lady and Careless Whisper

Rose, I must disagree with you. I really hate the salsa song Lady by Orquesta de Palabra. It is like fingernails on a blackboard for me. It is almost as bad as the salsa version of George Michael's Careless Whisper that they play with it. Another indication that LA salsa music really is not significant. Palabra is made up of a lot of Cubans who couldn't make it in Cuba. If you want to hear a great salsa version of an American pop song try Issac Delgado's Solar de la California, a version of Eagles' Hotel California -- Chincub

February 11, 2002 - Top 10 Love Songs

Hey Rose..Hope everything is going great... this top ten romantic salsa song list is great... but there is one song that if not number one should definitely be in the top ten... during this song if you grab a partner and dance the right way... (Puerto Rican Style of course!!..haha!!)... it becomes purely a true love song... I am sure you have danced to it... (although they do not play it much here in Toronto... I guess because here in Toronto they are more worried about dips and flips and showing off... as opposed to feeling the romance in the music)... anyway that is a story for another day... the name of the song is Esa Mujer by Tony Vega....very popular in the early nineties... but still a classic.!!... ciao and keep up the good work! Alfie

Dear Alfie, thanks for responding and what's really coincidental is that "Esa Mujer" by Tony Vega was also chosen by Freddy (an incurable romantic and a soulmate for romantic songs to dance to), but to keep the list to the Top 10, I didn't include it... Rose Knows

February 6, 2002 -- Another love song for the list

Aloha, my name is DJ Rod Moreno "El Moreno de La Salsa" from out here in Hawaii. Just wanted to add another song to the valentine's list, it's from the new Gran Combo CD -- the song is called called "Me Muero Por Ella." The singer is singing to his long time love and chorus goes, "Ella sera mi compaqera en el amor y yo muero por ella" which means "She'll be my companion in love and I'd die for her" Overall, it's a beautiful song about a long time love and how much she means to him. It's the kind of song you'd like to hear at your 50th wedding anniversary.
Saludos, Rod

February 6, 2002 -- mistake on salsa lyrics

I'm sorry! I mean this in the most respectful way, but while checking out your lyrics I found that you have "Deborame otra vez" listed under Eddie Santiago as the singer, the original singer and composer on of this song is Lalo Rodriguez "el papa de la salsa romantica"
Like i said before i don't mean to be disrespectful, but I as well as hundreds of salseros navigate your website every now and them, (I particulary do it cause of your articles, they are great, I love them and had help me out a lot! ) and i want to receive the correct info just like everybody else! thank you for your time, Anon.

Dear Anon, thank you for taking the time to write in and letting us know who originated the song. No disrespect taken, after all, it's always nice to know who originated the song; but for your own information, the song and the artist was chosen because this is the version we know, love and dance to in Toronto -- Rose Knows

February 6, 2002 -- romantic salsa song

You forgot to put "Esa Mujer" by Costa Brava, a great song with a strong 1 beat. It talks about a woman that had give bad remarks about a man from a previous relationship and now the man is giving bad remarks about her. Very popular in Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico as well as in South America. Hope u enjoy it! Thank you for your time, Anon.

February 5, 2002

Dear Rose Knows: Just wanted to say thank you for the Valentine's Day Salsa Songs for Lovers and Broken Hearts. You seem to have hit the essence of what I was trying to convey back in my January 14th letter. When I said that there is a romantic angle encompassed in salsa dancing that hasn't been discussed that needs to be explored. You provided such a wonderful start. I knew somehow that you wouldn't let me down. Again, thanks!!! Sincerely, Juan S. from Miami, FL.

If you have a favourite "salsa love song" to dance to that other Readers or Dancers might enjoy, please feel free to email me and we'll post it up. We also had so much fun putting this together that we would love to hear what you think about this list.
