'Live at Birdland'
Larry Harlow's Latin Jazz Encounter
Latin Cool Records, New York City

Here's a new record label from NYC to watch out for... They just signed up Larry Harlow (Fania All Stars), and he's released this great new latin jazz CD. It's not pure salsa for dancing, but a great CD if you're a fan of latin jazz or are looking for an alternative when you're bored of playing salsa all day long. Click here for audio clips.

Larry Harlow wrote: "All these years a recurring dream I always had, was to play at Birdland. This past weekend my dream came true. Andy Kaufman , co-owner of Birdland, is a Latin music lover. He , as I , have always followed Cuban music with a passion. We are collectors of vintage Latin music and videos. Andy called me last March and said, "Why don't you put together a small group of Latin Jazz players and do a few days at Birdland".

Well, the thought did sound good but Jazz was not my forte. I was always into DANCE music. I had never played Latin jazz before..." click here for full story...

Ray Viera was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Since his childhood he has always listened to the recordings of the great "Soneros", such as Hector Lavoe, Ismael Rivera, Ismael Miranda, Chamaco Ramirez and Marvin Santiago. He is also known for singing as backup on the following albums:

It's so new that none of the music sites have clips available, but if you've forgotten their music, check out the links to their two previous albums, Cogele El Gusto and Saboreando Salsa Dur en el Bronx.

'De Aqui Pa'lla'
Raulin Rosendo

One of my favorite salsa vocalists, Raulín Rosendo, is back with a new release that will not disappoint. This straight-ahead salsa project, with participating musicians such as pianist Isidro Infante, Luisito Quintero on percussion, Johnny Pacheco -- and many others -- on coro, this one is strictly for the dancers.
There are lots of solid danceclub-ready tracks here: “Vuela Mujer” and “Tengo Envidia” are sure bets. And Mr. Rosendo’s 7-1/2 minute “Homenaje a Héctor Lavoe” will be sure to get those old-school dancers out in front. (“La Banda,” “Abuelita,” “Mi Gente,” are but a few buttons that are pushed. A guaranteed applause) Ultimately, it’s the cover track, “De Aqui Pa’lla,” a Sony Ovalle arrangement, that is the killer here. DJs make note: Play this track. Raulin is on fire.
Highly recommended. (BP, 2002-09-18)

If the Buena Vista Social Club started the fire, this Next Generation has just dumped a truckload of gasoline to it. This is the stuff of Cuban musical dynamite. " excerpt from descarga.com.

'Un Gran Dia En El Barrio'
The Spanish Harlem Orchestra

To be released in September 2002, this is a new release in the tradition of old-school salsa dura. Billed as "Harlem's answer to Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club," Oscar Hernandez and his crew of seasoned New York salsa veterans pay tribute to the best salsa that this city has produced.

As per barnesandnoble.com... "Above all, the album reaffirms the primacy of a New York sound, powered by Puerto Rican adaptations of Cuban music, performed by the mosaic of Latinos (and Jews and African Americans) that made up East Harlem. The music that became salsa, which in turn infected all of South America and finally the world, truly began here. All props given to the oldsters of Havana, but if you really wanna dance, there's only one social club to join." Click here for music clips...

'Tremenda Rumba!'
Maraca

Just released in 2002, this CD from Cuba is not just for dancing, but a great CD to just listen to as there is a wide range of musical styles depicted in this CD. I've included excerpts from the album booklet which explains beautifully their musical interpretations much better than I can. The tracks that caught my attention for dancing are:

1. Se Te Acabó Rumba
[Salsa]4:44
2. Castígala [Salsa-Ragga] 3:54
5. Pura Ilusión [Salsa] 4:25
10. Yo Bailo de Todo [Salsa-Son] 4:20

Excerpts from the Album Booklet -- "Tremenda Rumba! is a meeting between the incredible pictorial world of Salvador Gonzales and the rich musical mind of flutist, composer and arranger Orlando Valle "Maraca". 'Tremenda Rumba!' is a journey that takes us to roots of the Afro-Cuban culture. A journey fueled by Salvador's graphic descriptions and Maraca's characteristic musical fusions. It represents the beliefs of a culture whose reminders of slavery transcend its social and religious history, using music to overcome the nostalgia and turn it into a colorful and radiant Carnaval....

In Tremenda Rumba! The word "Rumba" must be interpreted in its broader sense. Moving beyond the image of a party, a pagan party, a religious party, a peasant party, and an urban party. It is the dance-hall format from its predecessor; Classical music and its indigenous form: the Danzon which is represented by the Cuban National Ballet, it is the popular dance; Rumba, Timba, Songo and Rap that reflect the more urban side of our music, while the "Son Montuno" has its origin in the peasant world which is brought to life through Salvador's inspiration.

Tremenda Rumba! is an absolute expression of today's Afro-Latin culture. It is a tribute to Afro-American culture of all times and from all countries, it is true to it's roots at the same time that it embraces the mutiple sounds of Latin America and the Caribbean fusing rhythms of Cumbia, Reggae, Ragga. This will make the Afro Cuban sound universal. It will make the music of the world appreciate its multiple ethnicity. This fusion will generate yet another and will develop a new creative space for those to come." -- a special Thank You to DJ Billy Bryans of mundialmusic.com who introduced me to this album to help widen my cuban horizons... Rose Knows

'Pa'l Bailador'
Johnny Polanco

Just released on January 22, 2002, I listened to the tracks and it sounds like a "must-have" for the salsa aficiondo who's looking for something a little different, but classic at the same time.

"In his function as the fearless leader of the ultimate West Coast party band of the Latin kind, the New York-born Dominican/Rican multi-instrumentalist/composer/ arranger Johnny Polanco has earned a reputation for creating what the local music writer Lina Lecaro categorized once as "the kind of infectious, rhythmic, multilayered Latin music that makes even the most timid wallflower abandon all restraint and give it a whirl on the dance floor." This assessment can be applied to the repertoire
of Johnny Polanco & Conjunto Amistad¹s second disc (aptly titled Pa'l Bailador) as proven beyond any doubts by the following exhibits, numerically identified from 1 to 12..." quoted from Morrowland Records website.

1. GUAGUANCÓ CON RUMBA
2. XIOMARA
3. ME VOY PA' COLOMBIA
4. SAL DE MIS SUEÑOS
5. COCINANDO UN SON
6. DESCONFIANZA
7. PASA EL TIEMPO
8. TIERRA DE MI ABUELA Y PAPA
9. BRAZO EN BRAZO
10. UN MENSAJE PARA BRENDA
11. BAILE DE LOS NIÑOS
12. VINE PA' ECHAR CANDELA
