'Salsa Brava'
Sonora Carruseles

Hot CD Releases by Rose Knows

Audio CD (July 13, 1999)
Original Release Date: April 1, 1997
Country of Origin: Colombia

For the last 20 years, Columbian salsa bands have dominated the Latino dance-hall scene with fierce sounds they call salsa brava (angry salsa). Dynasties like Grupo Niche and Fruko y Sus Tesos brought a hard-pounding swing back into the genre after the 1980s commercially induced salsa romántica fad diluted the music to mediocrity with repressed rhythm sections, lame arrangements, and sugar-coated lead vocals. And the salsa gods and goddesses have blessed dance floors with yet another Columbian treat: the youthful Sonora Carruseles return with their third sizzling effort, Con Todos Los Hierros. From the outset their remake of boogaloo king Pete Rodríguez's "Arranca en Fa" is manna for dancing kings and queens, with tunes and arrangements that draw deeply from the 1970s New York City salsa scene. Once turned on, there's no turning back, as multiple "mosaícos" (medleys) groove to no end, forming a kaleidoscope of Afro-Caribbean rhythms with cool cumbia undertones. The voices of Harold Peláez, Gabino Pampini, and Marinho Paz further excite the already saucy music. If someone asks you to bring chips and salsa to a barbeque this summer, don't mess around--bring the hottest you can find: Sonora Carruseles. --Jesse "Chuy" Varela

'Greatest Salsa Classics of Colombia, Vol. 1'
Various Artists

Hot CD Releases by Rose Knows

Audio CD (July 13, 1999)
Original Release Date: April 1, 1997
Country of Origin: Colombia

Fittingly, Tito Puente's final album (save for a collaboration with Eddie Palmieri) finds the great bandleader-percussionist taking a young audience into the past with an in-concert set of classics including the title track, "Ban Ban Quere," and, of course, "Oye Como Va." The energy never wanes as Puente visits his many styles ("Cha Cha Cha Mambo," for one) and tempos. Particularly hot is the percussive breakdown on "Guaguanco Margarito," which is both smashing and subtle in the way of only the very finest jazz. "I'm gettin' to ya!" the ebullient Mambo King exclaims more than once between songs; he sounds as if he were just as pleased as in the midcentury years he spent inventing this music. Mambo Birdland won a 2000 Grammy (for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Performance), Puente's fifth. --Rickey Wright

'Obra Maestra / Masterpiece'
Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri

Hot CD Releases by Rose Knows

Audio CD (July 18, 2000)
Original Release Date: July 18, 2000
Country of Origin: New York, U.S.A.

The original title of Tito Puente's final album was Por Fin--"Finally"--a reference to the fact that Puente and fellow Latin-jazz titan Eddie Palmieri never had recorded together, despite Puente's work with pianist Palmieri's brother Charlie early in their careers. Obra Maestra--"Masterpiece"--however, is an equally apt description for this set of a dozen mostly uptempo performances recorded shortly before Puente's death in May of 2000. While engaging in the infectious dance rhythms and perfectly calibrated, often blaring, ensemble horn statements you'd expect, the group also revels in the many shades of subtlety inherent in the arrangements. Two medleys of mariachis and boleros are especially fine-tuned, and it's gratifying also to hear the rest of the players make room for Palmieri's immaculately off-kilter solo on "Marchando Bien." Puente himself is as sizzling as ever, although he seems content to throw in his lot with the rhythm section, basking once more in the glorious sound. --Rickey Wright

'Live at Birdland'
Tito Puente

Hot CD Releases by Rose Knows

Audio CD (August 25, 1998)
Original Release Date: August 25, 1998
Country of Origin: New York, U.S.A.

It has been 40 years since Tito's first Dancemania album captured the explosion of Latin sound from his band, who were then packing in the dancers at New York's Palladium. This live album recaptures that feel, using a bigger band than the original, but the same arrangements. The major difference is that this time the soloists have more space in which to stretch out, and they take full advantage of the opportunity. But at the same time, this is Latin jazz that never forgets it was made for dancing. The rhythms percolate and boil, the horns reach for the sky, and everybody just wants to mambo. Not many people get a chance to remake and remodel their past this way; even fewer could do it this well. --Chris Nickson

'The Best of Tito Puente, Vol. 1'
Tito Puente

Hot CD Releases by Rose Knows

Audio CD (August 25, 1992)
Original Release Date: August 25, 1992
Country of Origin: New York, U.S.A.

This remastered retrospective gathers together choice recordings from Tito Puente's greatest decade: the 1950s. Puente brought big-band jazz to traditional Afro-Cuban music and fostered an American craze for Cuban music, which originated in Puente's native New York City. The Best Of includes such great mambos as "Swingin' the Mambo" and "Mambo Gozon," featuring the smooth, sweet voice of Santitos Colon, and the outstanding cha chas "Que Sera Mi China" and "Separala Tambien." Other highlights include "A Gozar Timbero," showcasing Puente's enormous talent on timbales, and "Cuban Nightmare," with its blazing horns and furious percussion. The final instrumental, "Picadillo," shows off Gilberto López's nimble piano fingers while firing through a mambo jazz jam. Though The Best Of features recordings from as far back as 1950, the sound quality is outstanding. What's more, the band is red-hot, and best of all, Tito's at the height of his percussive powers. An exhilarating musical testament. --Karen Karleski

'Remembranzas'
Los Soneros del Barrio

Hot CD Releases by Rose Knows

Country of Origin: New York, U.S.A.

This cd has a very special place in my collection (DJ Fab). I was thinking of going to buy another copy just in case the one I bought might start skipping (even though that I do own a cd burner!) I am unable to do this recording justice by praising it to the nth degree because, dear salsa freaks, you have to “break ya wallet” and do yourself a huge favor and buy this cd! Remembranzas is the smoking new project of Los Soneros del Barrio. I am almost certain that all you salsa lovers have a copy of their first album entitled Los Soneros Del Barrio: Martin Arroyo & Frankie Vázquez (1999) or you immediately would recognize the infectious groove of the first track played at some of your favorite dance halls. I think they’ve really outdone themselves with this compilation because the rhythms are so meticulously crafted that even MISTER T would consider taking salsa lessons!!

As a DJ, I love playing remixes. Don’t get me wrong - I’m not dissing the old recordings, but when I hear those old salsa compositions with superior sound quality, I do appreciate them more. Each remix has its own interpretations and that’s what makes it interesting. Not all artists do a good job when remixing a song, but let me assure you that from the time you place this cd on your cd tray, you’ll hit the repeat button fifty times just to listen to the Tommy Olivencia super classic Trucutu. Once you pass the first track, then you gotta fight your way through the most haunting melodies ever written. The Roberto Roena hit, Con Los Pobres, mesmerizing soothes your mind then BAM - in comes La Sonora Poncena classic with Tumba Mabo. I mean you want challenging? Just come and get a dose of these flavors.

I’ve never been so inspired by one cd. These days, you would be lucky if you like more than a couple of tracks on any given album. However, Remembranzas is so different (or maybe I’m too biased) since they’ve done a fantastic job on Perico Macuna, which originally was done by Angel Canales who happens to be my most favorite artist. The only sad thing about this cd is the fact that on the first album it was Frankie Vasquez and pianist Martin Arroyo, but Martin passed away before the completion of this project.

So before they run out of stock, rush over to Rincon Hispano and get yourself a copy of Remembranzas by Los Soneros del Barrio - and no I didn’t get a free copy or would’ve given you exact directions!! DJ Fab

'Libre'
Marc Anthony

Hot CD Releases by Rose Knows

For all the Marc Anthony fans, he's finally released a salsa CD once again in November 2001 in over 3? years. His real name is Marco Antonio Muñiz and he was born on September 16, 1968 in New York City of Puerto Rican parents.

Originally, only the latin community and those who danced salsa had heard of him until he launched his first English album, slkdjfldks, which was a major hit in the English community and is a must-have album if you love his voice. Marc Anthony has sold more albums than another other salsa singer in the World!

He has a diverse musical foundation ranging from Salsa, to American Popular music, to Dance music--and that's why he has such a broad fan-base! Marc Anthony is no doubt the greatest salsero in the world. His smooth, sensual, hypnotic voice captivates each and every listener, enveloping them in his rich latin rhythms. And...Marc Anthony has sold more albums than any other salsa singer in the world!

1. Eres Mia
2. Amarte
3. Barco A La Deriva
4. Hasta Que Vuelvas
5. Yo Dudo Que Con El
6. Celos Y Envidia
7. Tu No Sospechas
8. Vivir
9. Y Se Acabo El Amor
10. Que Dependencia
11. Este Loco Que Te Mira
12. Caminare

There's a palpable sense of joy in Marc Anthony's voice. The salsa star and pop sensation may be slight in stature, but when he opens his mouth to sing, the sheer power and passion of his tenor grabs a hold of your heart and makes you sit up and pay attention. The king of contemporary salsa was born and raised in New York City, but as good as Anthony is in his native tongue, he is triumphant when he sings in Spanish. Like Youssou N'Dour, Celia Cruz, and other great voices, Anthony's intensity and purpose transcend language barriers: even if you don't understand his words, it's difficult not to feel what he is expressing. On his first salsa collection since 1997's potent Contra la Corriente (and his first CD since his 1999 self-titled, slightly watered-down pop smash) Marc Anthony allows the emotionality of the rhythm to take control. Backed by a topnotch band, Anthony's supple voice carries the beat along, and on tracks like the propulsive "De Que Depende" he soars. His joy and the joy of hearing a great singer are contagious. --Amy Linden. To hear clips and find out more about the album, click here. Here's another cool site I found which is a fan website which has all the lyrics to his latest album and others.

'Betece'
Africando All-Stars

Hot CD Releases by Rose Knows

Released in December 2000, here's an unusual album you wouldn't hear normally in the regular clubs unless you're into World Music, such as DJ Billy Bryans, who introduced me to this great album for dancing and listening. The ultimate salsa song for beginners and my personal favourite is "Doni Doni" -- I'm sure you've already heard this song in the clubs and/or by some of the salsa instructors. If you're looking for hard-core, super-fast salsa, this is not the album for you. This is a perfect album for those who are looking for an album to practice their salsa dancing as the songs are of a slow to medium-fast tempo.

This is the fifth album released under Africando All-Stars with their mix of Afro-cuban music. Cubalatina.com wrote: "For a few years, Salsa has experienced a considerable development near the African musicians. It is too often forgotten that this music, if it developed and found its marks of nobility in Cuba, is actually inspired by ancestral rates/rhythms come from the black continent." Just released in September 2001. José Alberto "El Canario" is an artist with an exceptional voice and a unique style. Originally born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, he moved to Puerto Rico and in 1983, he hired a well-known group of musicians and formed the José Alberto "El Canario" & Su Orquesta; the most spectacular and danceable group in New York. In 1987, Ralph Mercado chose José Alberto, to inaugurate the Tropical catalog of the RMM label. "El Canario" has recorded a dozen excellent productions (ten of them for RMM). Celia Cruz has chosen him as her colleague on stage and for years they have become the most perfect and solid combination in international music.

'Wild Wild Salsa'
by Puerto Rican Power

Hot CD Releases by Rose Knows

Here's another album that's just been released in the last few months that's 100% salsa. You may know them already as they already have some great hits in the past, such as one of my personal favourites, Tu Carinita. Puerto Rican Power was formed by bassist Jesús Castro in the early '70s, soon granting its leadership to trumpet player Luisito Ayala. Puerto Rican Power specialized in accompanying all the artists of the FANIA that visited the island of Puerto Rico, such as: Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, Pete " Count " Rodriguez, Vitín Avilés, Santitos Columbus, Ismael Miranda, Héctor Lavoe, Paquito Guzmán and Frankie Ruiz. This album has some artists you may recognize, such as Bobby Valentin (Arranger), Justo Betancourt (Coro), Victor Manuelle (Coro), Gilberto Santa Rosa, (Coro) and more...

3. Me Toco Sufrir
4. Cuando Faltas Tu
5. Quiero Decirte
6. Un Nuevo Amor
7. Contigo
8. Mañana Que Mas Me Da

The no. 1 single in the latin music scene is "Pena De Amor"; the song that caught my attention is "Me Tiene Loco", but you'll find that every song is 100% salsa! To hear clips, click here.

It just seemed appropriate to highlight them first as this was one of the many reasons why it was important to go to Puerto Rico this year -- and who knows when I'd have the opportunity to see them and other classic singers and bands again. Definitely a must-have to your collection!

1 - El Amor Es Ciego
2 - Se Nos Perdio El Amor
3 - Me Libere
4 - Viva Puente
5 - Amigos
6 - Dime Que Quieres
7 - Me Muero Por Ella
8 - Nadie Como Ella

Which are my favourites? Well, that always comes down to personal preference, the no. 1 single in the latin music scene is "Me Libere", a great song to dance to (and you may have danced to it in the clubs), but you'll find that every song is 100% salsa!
