Rose, I love your website, very well designed and easy to navigate. I love the discussion forum and would like to suggest a subject regarding one of my pet peeves. "Students who try to teach other students in class during the class." Everyone hates it except the person doing it. It is distracting and upsetting, humiliating and lots more. I miss what the instructor is saying and I did not ask for the other students advice which is often incorrect and why doesn't the person concentrate on his own dancing. We are in class to learn but those annoying people are hindering our learning. I find usually the ones given advice are the worse dancers. I would love to hear comments on this maybe, some of these people will recognize themselves and would stop being so annoying. NY On2 Salsera |

The Feedback.... November 22, 2002 -- Students who try to teach I've been learning to dance salsa for two years now and have been learning from the "Salsaman" in Hawaii. I love salsa and it is so nice to know that there are so many salseras out there like me! I can relate to the experience of students who try to teach other students. In response to the message about students who try to teach, that is also one of my pet peeves. I can honestly hope that those who read this will try to understand that it is annoying when a fellow student tries to teach another student (who just wants to learn from the instructor) during a lesson. Last summer I vacationed at another island (I live in Oahu and went to Maui) and I decided to visit and participate in a salsa class. I have this "good and positive" habit of smiling while I dance because it is a reflection of how much fun salsa is. I don't mind changing partners, until it was my turn to dance with this man who, while the teacher was explaining a styling movement, was trying to explain something completely different from what the instructor was talking about: that I must create a "friction" with my hands by pushing against his hands. He even managed to subtley insult me as he said: "No, no, no, you can't give way! No, no! You must push against my hands and I do to yours. Don't be such a weak dancer." It got to a point that I was either pushing too softly or too harshly. After about five minutes of this quasi-tortuous experience (and by that time, I stopped smiling), I missed my teacher's explanation by having to listen to something I could've learned later (without the abrasiveness). We changed partners and realized that the other students didn't enjoy dancing with him either, as he was doing the same thing to them! I could be nice and take this experience as having an "extra lesson" but give me a break! Maybe I am a sensitive person, but I always want my learning experience to be fun! So this is to those students who think they have the good intention of teaching at the same time the instructor is teaching: Thanks, but no thanks! Teach me at another time and place. Salsa class is when I learn from the salsa instructor! Pardon me, but I just needed to vent and I hope that students like the gentleman described above would just stop trying to teach other students! 17, 2002 -- Students who teach... It's
funny because we are all sort of taught that women 'follow'. That does
not mean that they become dumb, def and mute. The next time someone
is doing something that you are not cool with, let them know politely.
It will save you frustration and at the same time let them know what
your about.
