Dec 26, 2001 dance shoe shops in Budapest
Please, could you tell me on which address can I find latin sport dance shoe shops in Budapest, I would be sincerely grateful. Mea

Hi Mea, the best way for you to find shoe shops in Budapest would be to either do a search on www.google.com and type in "Budapest dance shoes" or if they have a yellow pages, look for dance school supplies; and if that doesn't work, contact any ballroom school instructors and ask where they buy their shoes and which ones they recommend

Dec 23, 2001 Hello. My name is Richard from England. I am trying (without success) to find an internet site that can tell me where to buy a CD by Orquesta Maracay with a track called Descarga Maracay. Can you help?
Regards.

Hi Richard, I guess you don't know about www.google.com where you can put Orquesta Maracay CD album and get all the results from that cause I found one album that you can get the song, but no one seems to have the album... in my quickie search...

http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/music/B00004YBY6/402-1511012-3473708

I'll post it on the site and see if anyone responds...

Dec 3, 2001 Hi, I was wondering if you have heard or got any feedback from the Latin Night on November 23rd at The Arnie - pub at Mohawk College in Hamilton? Just curious to find out. Thanks, Kristen

Dear Kristen, unfortunately, I couldn't go that night and I haven't had any feedback..

Nov 30, 2001 Hello, Can you please tell me, if you know, which latin club Tony Dee is part owner of. I believe it is in Toronto though I know there are many there. Thanks for any help. Sandy

Dear Sandy, sorry, I'm not familiar with that name, but maybe one of our Readers can shed some light...

Nov 28, 2001 Hi, pretty good selection. My favorites include:
- orquesta la palabra - lady (local band, slow but very rhythmic)
- the latin brothers - pegaso (this sung by others, melcochita, raulin
rosendo and maybe others)
- puerto rican power - pena de amor
- puerto rican power - emergencia de amor
- joe arroyo - la guerra de los callados
- joe arroyo - negra piel candela
- joe arroyo - barranquilla me quedo (these 3 songs by J Arroyo are my all
time favorite, extraordinary)
- brenda k star - herida (there are too many male singers in salsa, so her voice is very refreshing)
- orquesta de la luz - i'm a piano (spanish and japanese lyrics mixed)
Some of the song mentioned may be in your first edition since I have not seen your previous edition. If you can give me a link I will appreciate it.
Thanks, Ken

Dear Ken, thanks for sharing your favourites -- you can access all my favourite dance song lists from the home page under the Hot CD Release section or our new latin music section.

Nov 28, 2001 shoes and clothing
Hello, I was wondering if you had any info on shoe and clothing distributers in Toronto or Canada. When I go to other sites, most distributers are in the US and I know that people in Toronto have ballroom shoes. I am interested in purchasing shoes but I don't know where to go, can you direct me anywhere? Thanks a lot. Sara

Dear Sara, my goodness, everyone seems to be shopping for shoes in Toronto! If you look at the email below for November 21st, I've already listed some places in Toronto to shop... Rose Knows

Nov 26, 2001 Is it really "Con Caché" or "Con Aché" ??? The flyer I have says "Con Aché".. Also, is there any way (website?) where I could find info on that band, i.e. theirs songs and who plays in it?? Thanks! Stephanie

A note from DJ Billy Bryans: very different latin groups with similar sounding names Son Aché are a son and son montuno (ie Cuban) group who do a Friday night residency at Cervezaria near the corner of College and Ossington. Con Caché are a new salsa and descarga (ie Nuyorkian) group with members from Vibrason who debut at The Bamboo on Dec 15th. Both are excellent.

Nov 26, 2001 I would appreciate it if you can help me get a video of the basic for learning the tumbas. I'm actually writing from Goa India. Please give me some information. Thanking you in anticipation. Yours faithfully, Cedric Viegas.

Dear Cedric, what a nice surprise to hear from someone in India. At this time, I'm not aware of any videos on tumbas. You may want to try the search engines and see if there are any dance websites that may list them -- Rose
On 11/28, one reader wrote: Take a look at Descarga.com. They have
probably at least two dozen instructional videos on Afro-Cuban drumming.

Nov 22, 2001 Cafe Havana -- Anybody like it there, I went last Saturday night and had an amazing time, the group from Cuba was fabulous! dancinggirl

Nov 31, 2001 Hey Rose, I was reading an article and it mentioned suede and/or thin leather soled shoes for proper dancing. I was wondering if there were any specialty stores in Toronto that I could purchase a shoe like this. Also I was interested in the dance sneaker that you also mentioned, I like to practise in my sneakers but the grip on the sole makes it very hard to move. Could you help me out. Thanks, Amanda

Dear Amanda, the places where you can try on and buy dance shoes are Kleen Air at Yonge & Wellesley, Dance Plus or Stardust Dance Shoes (you'll probably need a car to get there).

If you are interested in dance sneakers, then try Malabar Dance Supplies downtown.
They are located at 14 McCaul St. (just north of Queen, west of University Ave.), 416-598-2581. The more popular styles are by Blochs and Capezio. Another store is Toronto Dancewear Centre near Hwy. 401 and Wilson.

Nov 19, 2001 Aloha Rose,
Well, Rene and Michelle are in Maui now, but it was GREAT having them here! For a town usually starved of great dancers, we had a real treat this week with Rene and Michelle visiting the same time as Al and Edie. We all went to the luau on Friday, which was a lot of fun, and then everyone performed on Saturday at Planet Hollywood and absolutely blew the roof off the joint. Rene and Michelle will try to tell you they didn't do so good, but don't believe them - they slammed! Hopefully, I can get them to scan some pictures. At any rate, after getting a little taste of toronto, we're definitely hungry for more, so keep them coming this way. And if you are looking for a host for Honolulu, I would be glad to help. Mahalo, Rob

Nov 24, 2001 Hi Rose, absolutely love your website, I read it almost daily, and it keeps getting better and better. You recently mentioned about the short video you had taped of you and Oscar and others at i believe Babalu, and that it was airing soon on TV, please e-mail when that will be aired, I'm dying to see it and to videotape it also. Keep up the great work and remember you can't please constant complainers, let the positive people lead your way in making this the place to go for all our salsa needs -- Tony

Nov 19, 2001 Hey Rose Knows,
How do you have 5 DLG songs in the top 100...yet only have 1 Hector Lavoe, 3 Gran Combo, 2 Marc Anthony, 0 Tony Vega,....umm...do you guys in Toronto really know Salsa or what?...DLG over El Gran Combo, Hector Lavoe, Rey Ruiz, Gilberto Santarosa....etc.....This is why these clubs in Toronto suck....!...The wrong music is being played....anyway this is just my humble Puerto Rican opinion....Please don't take offense...

Again..I didn't mean to start anything....I was just cruising the net...and I came upon yours...( Nice site by the way)....I have been in TO for 2and a half years...from NYC....and..the Salsa here just is not good...there are
some good dancers...but the DJ's are not very good...they say they play what the people want...but...that is not true...if you play good music people will dance...and be happy... I also have this thing...where I think DLG sucks.. .they get too much attention and it brings it away from the
real Salsa out there....thats it....I am going to check out your site again...ciao... Alfie

Dear Alfie, I totally understand where you're coming from now that I've visited other salsa cities and have started to ask what are those great songs being played by many of the artists you have mentioned and more. personally don't think our music totally sucks as I happen to also like DLG and other commercial or romantic Salsa, along with the old and new classic salsa, such as El Gran Combo, Ray Barretto, etc. Being Puerto Rican and having grown up with the music, you are exposed to it and live it and breathe it. To those of us who are not as fortunate to be born to salsa music, we have to find out the hard way and can only be exposed to what's available in our nightclubs.

Nov 13, 2001 Good Day, I have been reading your music reviews on the website and am wondering if you could list good Salsa 'albums' or collections, not just songs. For those of us who are just starting out it would be great if there were a collection of Salsa, Merengue, Bachada that you could recommend so we don't have to start with 10 or 15 CD's to find some good dancing music. I look forward to your response. Thank You, Chris

Dear Chris, that's partially why I started the Hot CD Releases page, many of the CD's I'm recommending have alot of great salsa already on one CD. When I've caught up on some of my backlog, I'll recommend some other CD's which you may enjoy collecting, but I also highly recommend going to a latin store and listen to "compilations" or the greatest hits of various artists. In many cases, the type of salsa you may enjoy dancing to may not be exactly the same as what I recommend as I enjoy dancing to various salsa, Sonora Carruseles, a much faster tempo, versus Marc Anthony, who is more Romantica... Rose Knows

Nov 12, 2001 Quimica Perfecta
I got chance to see Quimca Perfecta at the Bamboo last Friday. I'd say that this band is probably one of the best I've seen performing here. They had loads of energy, great rhythm and interesting changes to mood and tempo. In all extremely danceable. I strongly urge everyone to get out and see this band when they next play here -- Steve

Dear Steve, thanks for sharing this info as I unfortunately could not attend as I was already in Ottawa that evening. I also had a chance to talk to Billy Bryans who organized the event and he was very happy with the turnout and the Media. Apparently, they were a success! Can't wait to catch them the next time around... Rose Knows

Nov 11, 2001 Aloha Rose, Rene and Michelle arrived last night - wow! What great dancers and great people! Thank you so much for letting us know about their visit! It's going to be great to share aloha with them. You're next, right? It made me think of your idea of having hosts in each city. We should start a world salsa tour circuit, and put each city with a host on the map. Then, give people medals for completing the tour! Best wishes and good dancing from your friends in Hawaii. Mahalo Nui Loa! Rob

Nov 11, 2001 Dear Info-- I just came back from a great trip to California and had a wonderful intro to Salsa. I could be hooked. Anyway, I do have the Toronto website(s) but know from experience that for me TO is too far to travel on a regular (say weekly) basis for lessons. Do you have any info on classes &/or workshops in St. Catharines or the Niagara region? I wouldn't even know anywhere else to go to look for info around here, so anything would be helpful. Thanks for all the good work -- Maura

Nov 8, 2001 Montreal salsa clubs
I will be spending New Year's in Montreal this year. I have no idea about the salsa scene down there and I was wondering if you could provide me with a list of clubs to check out there. Or could you direct me to any salsa sites for Quebec City/Montreal? Thanks!! Sonia

Dear Sonia, you can try www.salsafolie.com or www.montrealconsabor.com. The more popular ones I keep hearing about in Montreal usually is Cubanos and Salsatheque -- Rose Know

Nov 7, 2001 Congratulations to Richie Rumbero!
Hello Rose, I just want to compliment Richie Rumbero on his comments. I have seen a lot of his comments posted on other websites and he was not always friendly as on these two recently posted on your site. I think that he is learning that the best way to discuss a topic is being kind to others, whether they have the reason or not. Thanks Richie! -- Timbera

Nov 6, 2001

THE PAST
My complaint is that I wish everyone stopped teaching and came back to the clubs as normal guys and gals. It was so much fun about 2 years back, although I am happy that I caught the tail end of it because it seems like it will never be the same again. Everybody teaches now or performs. It has become work. When I discovered Salsa music, it was like waking up on Christmas morning when I was 8. Then to be able to go to a club and find people who felt the same way as I did and dance until I got blisters was euphoric.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing anyone. This influx of incredible teachers/performers is only going to get Toronto noticed even more and develop the careers of some very talented people, but sighhhhhh. I can remember Circus. It all happened so fast. Where did the time go? Well hey at least i'm only 24, half you guys are in your 30's so hopefully i'll catch a second wind because I still have many years to go. I mean look at Oscar! Thanks for reading -- Darrylllll

Nov 5, 2001 Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Wilson Acevedo; I was the Musical Director and Timbal player of Vibrason. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful people who supported and followed Vibrason wherever we went. Thank You! For this, I believe it is my duty to clear up the misconceptions that have surrounded Vibrason for the past couple of weeks. You, the faithful followers deserve to know that the name Vibrason lives, yes!! But the members are not the same. The following members are no longer with Vibrason: Juan Carlos Cardenas, Lead Vocals; Paul Le Roux, Piano; Richard Morales, Bass; and myself inclusive, Wilson Acevedo, Timbales and Musical Director.

We will inform you the debut date of our newborn band. This we promise you: it will be hotter than ever and worth your wait. We will most definitely exceed your expectations. Once again, thank you all for your understanding, patience and support and remember…
TU VIDA NECESITA MAS MUSICA.

Nov 3, 2001 Good work. With regard to one selection: Ruben Blades--the correct title is "Pedro Navaja" or "Pete the Knife" a barrio version of "Mack the Knife" with a much more existential lesson... you should study the words. Actually, the song appeared on the Willy Colon album, "Siembra"- one of the most highly-evolved "old school" albums (vinyl), now considered a Colon-Blades collaboration. Check out "Buscando Guyaba" and other classics... you might put the whole album on... and while you're at it, find a copy of "El Gato" by Bobby Valentin (sometimes, you can find it on KaZaa). Ultimate old school, and underground poetry... and practically any El Gran Combo... find the one sometimes called "The Swim," about a "Marielito." -- Daniel

Nov 1, 2001 Classes near Brampton
My cousin and I want to learn SALSA. Is there a club near Brampton (Ontario) where we visit and observe before taking lessons? Malcolm

Dear Malcolm, unfortunately, I'm not aware of any clubs in Brampton.

Oct 29, 2001 Dancin' Shoes
Hi Rose, could you please list a few places in Toronto where we could buy ladies' salsa shoes? The only places I've heard of are on the Internet, or shoes are only available through brochures. It'd be nice to know if there was an easier, more direct way to buy dance shoes in Toronto, and perhaps try them on. Thanks! B.

Dear B, if you mean ballroom dance shoes, the places where you can try on and buy dance shoes are Kleen Air at Yonge & Wellesley, Dance Plus or Stardust Dance Shoes (you'll probably need a car to get there). If you mean dance sneakers, then try Malabar Dance Supplies downtown.

Oct 28, 2001 Salsa in Winnipeg?
Hi. I'm from Toronto, but I'm in Winnipeg for the week and I want to take my friend out Salsa dancing. She's never done it so she doesn't know where to go and I'm having a hard time finding any information. Do you guys know of anything? I'd appreciate your help and I'll be sure to let you know if I find anything myself. Thanks, Mike.

Dear Mike, unfortunately, we don't have any salsa contacts in Winnipeg, but I did manage to do a quick search and found this email address for a Winnipeg salsa forum. You might also try calling some ballroom dance schools or some latin restaurants and asking for info.

Oct 28, 2001 Hi, I visited your site and I've been trying to find websites w/pix from: Bacardi Salsa Congresso 2001 Puerto Rico. It was my first time to a congresso. I'm only 13 and a salsa beginner, but Ihad a blast. I was wondering if you have any pictures or any other websites from this event? thank you, Sarah

Dear Sarah, I did a quick search and it seems I'm the only website with a photo gallery at the moment -- Rose Knows

Oct 24, 2001 hi rose, how are you. hope everything is cool with you -- i was just looking through your web site and found out that toronto has a lot of dance groups now, it's so cool to see that.
nice website -- keep up the good work. i know it's hard work -- talk to you soon -- Dave Melendez, NYC

Oct 23, 2001

Dear TOsalsa, I read your review this past week about It Nightclub and decided to check it out on Thursday night. This is the most incredible Latin venue that I have been to in the city. For the serious salsa dancer, I can't imagine a better place to spend the evening. Downstairs has a very warm feeling when you walk into the lounge area, candle-light, fireplace, nice decor, etc. They even had some hors d'ouevres when I arrived which was a really nice touch.

I wasn't even aware of upstairs where the main club is until I started to see people moving through the hallway. As I reached the top of the stairs, I couldn't believe the size of the dance floor (all hardwood by the way) and the high ceilings make you feel like there is so much space. During the entire evening, I heard nothing but salsa and Alvaro has to be one of the best DJ's in the city. On top of all of this, there were no flashing laser lights to confuse you while you are dancing. The lighting changed a couple of times throughout the evening but only to go from a really nice reddish background to a funky blue colour. For anyone who hasn't been there yet, I would recommend it highly as a club that has it all for a great night of salsa dancing.

Thanks and keep up the good work with the website -- Matthew
PS They even had a couple of live conga players on the stage for most of the evening

Oct 21, 2001 Hi! We are visiting Honolulu from December 25 thru January 7. We love to do salsa dance. We would appreciate it if you could give us information about salsa dancing place (club or somewhere) during our stay at Honolulu. We are looking forward to hearing from you -- Hisako and Steve

Dear Hisako and Steve, please check our Travel Diaires for Hawaii, and luckily for you, we also have some friends who are going very soon and will hopefully bring lots of great info back!
October 26, 2001
Sure! If anyone is heading out here to Hawaii, feel free to send them my way. I'd be glad to meet them at the clubs, introduce them around, and make sure that they know the local spots to visit while they are on the island. Edie just sent a couple from chicago out here, and now they know everyone in the scene ;) -- Rob

Oct 15, 2001 DANCE SHOES
Where in downtown Toronto can I purchase dance shoes for flamenco or ballroom dance. Also, do you know where I can purchase long black or red dresses. Thank you -- Ann

Dear Ann, unfortunately there really isn't a good store for ballroom shoes downtown, but you could try Kleen Air at Yonge & Wellesley or also try Dance Plus or Stardust Dance Shoes who are further out. Regarding long black or red dresses... I would suggest checking out a mall with lots of women's clothing as long black party dresses will be in full force for the holiday season. I've even found small stores on Yonge Street near Wellesley that sometimes have great dresses or clothes for dancing. Good luck in your search... Rose Knows

Oct 10, 2001 Hi, I just moved to Burlington, Ontario, and I am looking for a salsa school in Toronto or in the area. I already did the first 2 classes in Montreal and I would like to continue my good work. Can you help me to find a good school for salsa, merengue, bachata? Thank you -- Martin

Oct 10, 2001 the salsa safari
I just wanted to express my appreciation for the article "the salsa safari." The descriptions of these club "animals" was so accurate while at the same time being amusing. Also, it helps us to identify which "animal" we are and which "animals" we should try to avoid becoming. This article was a keeper!! -- Steve

Oct 9, 2001 Rose, my name is Phree Betancourt. I am Justo Betancourt’s son. My father was down from Puerto Rico visiting me and hopefully staying with me. I own an Elite Mutimedia Firm in Dallas TX. Either way, I am writing because I was here with my dad messing around. As you may assume, he is OLD SCHOOL, so he has no clue what the internet is or what it can do. I was trying to explain to him what the internet is about and I did a search on his name tons of things popped up, and your website popped up. HE had a wonderful time reading what you had to say about his music, and I just wanted to take the time to say thank you and he is glad that you enjoyed the song as much as you did. -- Phree & Justo Betancourt

Oct 8, 2001 dance instructor search
I'm looking for an instructor in London, Ontario. I have some experience but want to improve my skills. Thanx, Barb

Oct 6, 2001 Kitchener/Waterloo?
Hi just wondering if could tell me if there any clubs and or places in Kitchner/Waterloo region where I could get spanish lesssons or if there are any clubs in the area? Thanks and I love your site! -- Sonja

Dear Readers, please email us if you have any information.

Oct 2, 2001 False cover info for Plaza Flamingo and El Rancho Restaurant/ Borinquen Nightclub -- I've gone to both these clubs numerous times with female friends and both clubs always tell my female friends that there is no free cover before 10:30pm on any night.
I know of many females who've gone to both of these bars because of the free cover before 10:30 that is advertised on your website.
I don't know if this is a scam being done by these bars but you should update you website to reflect the truth.
Thanks for allowing me to communicate this to you. Emanuel

Dear Emanuel, thanks for emailing us with this info and I'm really surprised that they do this because they have always let me in for free on Fridays when I've gotten there before 10:30 pm. (that's usually the only night I go to El Rancho or Plaza Flamingo) -- very strange; but didn't your friends know you can also print off this coupon which is also on our site?

Maybe print out a copy of this page from the toronto.com website to take with you...

Maybe your friends should possibly phone ahead and double-check in case it's an evening they don't allow anyone in for free, such as the long weekends possibly; and don't forget, we can't always guarantee that the club info is always accurate as clubs change their policies all the time. We rely on word-of-mouth for much of our up-to-date info. But thanks for writing and letting us know.

Sep 28, 2001 I think you may provide me with more information about a concert that occurd in san diego california in 1996 or 1995. The concert was great -- ruben blades, celia cruz, el gran combo, tito puente y oscar de leon were there. Please let me know
if you have any information. thanks Luis

Dear Readers, please email us if you have any information.

Sep 25, 2001 Please post a logo contest for United Salseros and Grupo Sabroso.

Sep 24, 2001 Dancing shoes
Hi there, I have been looking around to buy dancing shoes, but can't find them anywhere. Would you be able to help me? Clara

Dear Clara, if you're looking for ballroom shoes, I suggest Dance Plus or Stardust Dance Shoes. If it's just regular street shoes, then you will have to go store to store and look for thin-soled leather shoes that will support your ankles, but they will wear out quicker than ballroom shoes. With ballroom shoes, they fit like a glove but you shouldn't wear them outside as they have a suede bottom. Hope this helps.

Sep 17, 2001 Can you tell me where I can find Salsa instruction video tapes and music tapes in Canada or Toronto? Bing

Dear Bing, you can get music and some videos from Super Latin Music in Toronto or try visiting any of your local music stores and look for the latin section.

Sep 16, 2001 Coming to Toronto -- need to dance!
Hi Rose. I am a hairstylist from Chicago and will arrive in Toronto to style models hair for your Toronto fashion week. Ill arrive early wed 19th and stay till sun 23rd. Please recommend some great clubs that play only latin (salsa a little merengue) for the nights Ill be in town. Hope to see you out.
Thanks, Gary

Sep 10, 2001 Hi From Paris,
I am a salsa addict and I would like to come to Toronto for a whole week, but I still don't know the dates... however, could you tell me which are the good places to danse salsa? Thank you very much for your help, and don't hesitate if you need some information about salsa in Paris! SalsaRegards, ALAIN

Dear Alain, you can check out our Club Hangouts and What's Happening section on the right of our homepage as it has all the latest info on favourite clubs and salsa events in the City.

Sep 9, 2001 Hi Rose, I still check into TOsalsa from time to time to read Rose Knows and catch up on the Toronto scene. It's awesome out here in California --but I do have to say, Toronto's clubs still go head to head with the ones out here. TO is not behind at all in terms of club quality. The big diff is live music -- ALL the salsa groups come out and perform live in the clubs - sonora carruseles, grupo niche, adolEscentes and these californians think nothing of it! (meanwhile I was excited the first time going to see grupo niche in SanFran) -- Adrienne

Sep 7, 2001 I teach in the Internet Management Program at Humber College -- it's a content management course.

I show your site for the writing style -- there's a real passion there that's so engaging. The other thing I love about it is that it goes beyond just chatter to offer some excellent services for your readers (it's very interactive). To me, that's the difference between a good site and a great one. -- Lori

Sep 7, 2001 Aloha, I really like your web page! You Canadians ever think about coming out to Hawaii to dance? We have a small scene, but a lot of love for Salsa. We just had Salsa Brava out here, and Edie will be here in November. We're also putting on a small convention next year... kind of a vacation / dance party combo. So, we're growing ;) But it sounds like you guys have an awesome scene going already, and we'd love to have you share some of that stoke with us! If any of your dancers ever head out this way, make sure that you let us know so we can share some Aloha with you when you get here :) Mahalo, Rob

Sep 6, 2001

Good Day. I am a TV Producer in Dallas Texas, putting together a Salsa/Mambo related show for Dallas Community TV, a not for profit, non commercial, volunteer organization. This Volunteer production geared to introducing the North Texas community to our culture, Music, Dance, and way of life. The Salsa/ Mambo movement is Hot here in Dallas, as transplants from East and West coasts bring a variety of styles and moves to our growing community. This show is strictly voluntary and I will be sending copies to Community Television studios nationwide. Our people believe in this production and have put a lot of their free time into each segment of the show. We have had many obstacles to overcome, but we keep on moving forward.

We are looking for new talent in Music, Dance, and other related entertainment. If you or anyone you know would like to send a demo, please email me.

Thanks, Palante & Salsa forever
Tony Pacheco, Producer/Director

Sep 3, 2001 Hi Rose, do you know if there are any collections of best salsas on CDs and where I could get it? Thanx, Steve
Dear Steve, yes, there are salsa collections either by an artist you may like or general salsa collections. If you go to Super Latin Music in Toronto, you can ask them about these types of CD's and you can even listen to them before you buy. Some of my personal "classic" favourites of great music to listen to (too many to list) are Lo Mejor - La Misma Gente, Tito Puente's Mambo Birdland, and any salsa artist's greatest hits.

Sept 3, 2001 Dear Rose, It was great seeing you in Puerto Rico and Toronto. I wish I had more time in Toronto. I hardly got a chance to see all my friends and family, let alone check out all the latest salsa clubs. It was fun though. I look forward to reading your interview. It was a long one, eh? Warmest regards and Alvaro also sends his love, Josie Neglia

Aug 30, 2001 We are looking for a female salsa dance instructor, part time. Applicants with a background in other dance disciplines also welcome to apply. Interested applicants can send a resume by email or mail/drop off to Soles Dance Studio 1643 Dufferin St., Toronto, ON M6C 3L9

Aug 28, 2001 Visiting Toronto - would love company/dance partner.
First - thank you for a great site! I will visit Toronto on business on Oct 6th to Oct 10th and what is the best thing to do... mix business with pleasure of course ;-)
I'm an advanced salsera who dances basically any style but prefer NY Mambo and other cross-body lead styles. I have read your excellent guidance on clubs, but if you know of anyone who would like to hang out with a Swedish salsera (I've got a boyfriend... this is not meant to sound like a pick-up ad :-) ) I would really appreciate if you spread the word. I don't mind if you give people this e-mail (but no spamming please).
Take care - and see you on the dance floor! LOL, Marianne

Aug 22, 2001 Looking for lady dance partner
Dear Rose, I wonder if you could post this message on "Dear TOSalsa". I have been learning Salsa for the past six months and would classify myself as an intermediate-level dancer. However, I do not have a steady lady dance partner and as a result, I do not get to practice a lot of the steps I learn. I am in my early 30s and stand six foot tall. I am looking for a lady with whom I could dance and practice new steps for a couple of hours twice a week at the clubs. Thanks, M Fard.
Dear M Fard, unfortunately at this time I can't post this on our site cause you are not the first dancer to request this. There's other dancers out there that have also been patiently waiting for our partner search and we are almost ready. We are putting the last finishing touches for programming, will go thru a quick testing phase and then we'll launch it hopefully no later than October 1st?! In the meantime, why not ask a fellow student you are comfortable dancing with if they're interested in practicing? You just never know until you ask, maybe they're looking for someone to practice with too, but are afraid to ask...

Aug 19, 2001 Dance Shoes -- Hi Rose: do you know a store in the GTA that carries a large selection of dance shoes for women. I wear a size 11 which makes it even tougher to find. I'll be in LA in the Fall and am wondering whether that might be better place to look. Thanks for any suggestions...
Sharon.
Hi Sharon, you're best best is probably to go to a specialized ballroom shoe store where you can get custom-made shoes. It will be expensive, but at least you'll get it in the style, height and size you need. You can try Dance Plus or Stardust Dance Shoes. If you're going to LA, then check out Janette's shoes or look for a store in the US that sells Elegance Shoes if you want the shoes with glitter.

Aug 13, 2001 Can't find anyone to go out dancing with -- Dilemma - I love to go out dancing but just can't seem to find anyone to go out dancing with. My friends are not really in the salsa scene, but I really love it.
Any suggestions on how to meet others who are looking for people to go out dancing with -- I thought about classes, but I have a busy schedule and I'd rather go to a club and dance the night away - corny I know -- Jennifer
Hi Jennifer, the best way is either by taking a class where you can meet people to go out and practice with (time commitment), go to one of the clubs that offer lessons before the social dancing, such as Berlin, Tequila, Babaluu's, El Rancho, Plaza Flamingo, Courthouse or Park Ave., OR check out my article on how to fit in and/or find new dancer partners.

Aug 11, 2001 Wow! It seems like I learned the basic only yesterday. The past 8 months have been some of the best times of my life. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone whom i've had the pleasure of dancing with. I have definately enjoyed dancing with everyone and I hope you can say the same.

I want to send a special thanks to the group of hardcore dancers whom I had the pleasure of getting aquainted with at the Detroit Congress. You know who you are. Thank you for everything, whether it was teaching me a shine or giving me some pointers on my lead or follow. I really appreciate it.

On a parting note, I want to encourage everyone to just continue to dance and have fun. Never mind all the other stuff, life is too short. I hope to see all of you real soon on a dance floor in NYC -- Mike Sugar

Aug 10, 2001 Hi Rose, I'm planning a trip down to New York City at the end of the month and I was wondering if you knew of any good salsa clubs that I could visit. I'm going to be there from Monday to Thursday, so I'm looking for clubs on those nights. Thanks for your help, Barbara Kellam
Hi Barbara, the best place to check out what's happening in NYC is the SalsaNewYork.com website. From my own experience/feedback, I would go on Monday to Hush Nightclub, Tuesday to China Club, Wednesday at Nell's and Thursday to Latin Quarter. Hope that helps -- Rose Knows

Aug 10, 2001 Hello, Do you offer salsa training to children? I have a 9 year old who has taken a year of lessons and would like to pursue salsa more seriously. Thank you -- Catherine Thompson

Hi Catherine, our website doesn't give dance lessons but provides a service to our readers. I think it's great that you have a 9-year old who wants to take salsa seriously. I will put the word out with the instructors and see if anyone has any children's classes. As info, I just came back from Puerto Rico and was totally blown away by the talent of the kids from Venezuela, Puerto Rico and of course, Young Ambition from NYC (8-21 years old). Hopefully, salsa in Toronto will be so popular that we can also have more children involved.
I had an interview with Lillian Diaz, director of Young Ambision and the kids themselves, which will be totally inspiring to read once I complete it. I hope to have an answer for you soon -- Rose Knows

Aug 8, 2001 Hi, my name is Shirley. I'm interested in taking some latin dance classes. I was wondering if you have numbers of dance instructor or studios I could call. Thank you for your time. Shirley
Hi Shirley, our website doesn't give dance lessons, but you can check out our Instructors section..

Aug 8, 2001 Hi Does anyone in the Toronto area know of an all-ages night spot? Some of my friends are underaged and we'd like to go Salsa dancing. Thanks, T.O. Salseros.

Dear TO Salseros, hmm... good question, but if you go to some of the Socials which are offered on Sunday, that would be all ages. You will find them listed in our Non-Smoking Events section. Sometimes Latin Fever also offers some all age events.

Aug 7, 2001 Salsa near Toronto -- Hi, I was wondering if you knew of any salsa clubs or instructors in the kitchener/ waterloo/guelph area? -- Rafeek
Hi Rafeek, unfortunately we don't know of any clubs or instructors in that area. But if we do hear of any from our Readers, we will definitely post it up on our site.

Aug 2 , 2001 Niagara Falls Couples
If you are interested in Latin Dancing in the Buffalo/Niagara Area. I believe a club in downtown Buffalo called La Luna offers courses on Sat. at 9PM. I hope this was helpful -- Freddy

Aug 2, 2001 Parties for non salsa dancers
I'm trying to arrange a party for about 15 people who work in our office..dinner, dancing, maybe a show...would love to take them to a Latin club that features salsa and maybe offers lessons. Age range from 30 -55. Any ideas where we can go and also for a Christmas party - Gerry
Hi Gerry, There are lots of options, I'll mention a few which come to mind:
(1) Plaza Flamingo
2 levels, Spanish / flamenco shows in the restaurant downstairs. Dancing upstairs. (Friday or Saturday)
(2) Babaluu's
Good food. Great atmosphere. Too many people Friday or Saturday
for salsa dancing, but still fun. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday would be a little less crowded.
(3) Berlin's
On Tuesday live Latin band and food.
(4) Courthouse
On Friday. $$$$ food !!!
All of these places have a salsa class before the dancing starts.
You can check "http://www.tosalsa.com/clubs" for the numbers and address of the clubs. I hope this helps! Let us know how it turned out... - Ziv

Also, El Rancho's would be another great choice for dinner and dancing. Friday is their most popular day. Regarding Christmas Parties, it's a little too early to say, but regularly check out the "What's Happening" section of the home page as we will be listing all the parties in December! -- Rose Knows

July 26, 2001 Hi Rose, Great website! I was wondering if you have any suggestions about where to
buy dancing shoes. I went to Kleen Air on Yonge, but was disappointed in
the selection. Thanks, Lili

Hi Lili, if it's ballroom shoes you're looking for, you can try Dance Plus, Stardust or check out the website for Supadance Shoes for a distribu-tor. If it's for practice and shines, you can go to Malabar's downtown for jazz running shoes.

July 25, 2001 Do you teach tango? Thanks, Andrew

Hi Andrew, we don't, but you can contact Elizabeth Sadowska of Rhythm and Motion on our Instructors page or check out www.toronto-tango.com for lessons in various Toronto clubs.

July 25, 2001 Hi, My name is Hugo and I am from Sherbrooke (2 hours from Montreal). We are a little group of rueda lovers and we are looking for the next rueda competition (Montreal, Ottawa or Toronto). We want to participate as a rueda troupe. Do you have any information on the next event for that? Please, write me back, we tried and tried to find something without success. Thank you! Hugo Racine
Hi Hugo, it just so happens there's a Latin Dance Show Competition at Park Avenue on Wednesdays starting Aug. 1st, call Eddy at 416-618-3984. Semi-finals on Aug. 29th and Finals on Sept. 5th (1st prize: Trip to Cuba)

Instructor's list
In spite of your lengthy explanation why only some instructors are listed, it is totally unclear why some of the decidedly best instructors are not there: Vladimir Aranda of La Fregata and Spanish Center, Ana Machado and Gordon of Plaza Flamingo and El Rancho respectively, Guillermo Baez of Latin Fever, Martin...

It is NOT the matter of advertizing their classes, prices and so on. They are simply not listed. Having a site like this is a responsibility. Your comments about the instructors that teach or not teach at the night clubs seem to indicate that teaching at the night clubs is inferior. That is however how it all started with Josie Neglia teaching at Berlin and later teaching at the Mayan in LA with Francisco and Johny Vazques teaching at the night clubs all over LA, Luis and Joby teaching at La Conga, etc.

Of course it is your site and your choice, your preferences are your preferences. Simple honesty would be to just come out and say it as it is -- Rayuelo

Hi Rayuelo, Firstly, I appreciate your feedback. I'll try and answer the best I can...Right now we are only listing instructors with on going group classes. We do not currently list instructors who teach only private classes, or club drop-in classes. There are two reasons for this:
(1) This information tends to change often, and right now we do not have the time to constantly update it. (This is still a VERY time consuming nonprofit web site)
(2) TOsalsa does believe that for beginners, one of the best ways to learn is organized group lessons. Many drop-in club classes suffer from dancers being at different levels, and the instructor having a tough time accommodating the students. Proper group classes can progress from week to week, which is harder with club classes as people "drop in".
As you pointed out, this does not reflect on the instructor's ability at all. Almost every salsa instructor I know started in the clubs, and many still teach in clubs. In addition, we believe drop-in club salsa classes play an important role in promoting salsa dancing, since many dancers begin there.
However, we have created a "guideline" for the Tosalsa instructors section, which we feel is appropriate. Note that we are working on a new beginners section for the web site, where we will give a list of where to go for club drop-in classes. We believe this could be very valuable information for dancers who are just staring out and want to check out a few different instructors without yet committing to classes. This list would include all the classes you mentioned.
So far the TOsalsa instructors section includes all the instructors that we know of that give group lessons, and in addition some instructors we did not know who emailed us their information. We often depend on the instructors or our readers to send us information, and update us when information changes. In fact we JUST got an email about Ana Machado, which you listed, and it included lots of info and even a web site. She will be added to the instructors section when we update it next.
We would highly appreciate if you can send us more detailed information about the instructors you listed, or ask them to send us their information. That would assist us greatly. We realize TOsalsa is far from perfect, and will never satisfy everyone's wishes, but we try and give the best service that we can. Again, thank you for you comments. - Ziv, TOsalsa.com

July 23, 2001 Hello Rose, I sent an email a few months ago about if there was a partner search site in the works.
I am still looking for a partner. I am not sure if I am going to the wrong clubs or just asking the wrong people. If there is anything you can do it would be much appreciated. Also if you are concerned with someone maintaining the site I would be more than happy to be responsible for it. Let me know. Marcel.
Dear Marcel: Please check out my article which may help you in finding partners... Dancing with others...how to "fit in" and/or become a better dancer...

July 23, 2001 Dear Rose, I have a question. I went dancing at Ba Ba Lu's on Sunday evening, July 22. It was my first time there; it was nice and I enjoyed the club. However, for some reason, I noticed that it was difficult to move on that dance floor; the floor felt sticky. It could have been because the shoes I wore has rubber soles. Would it have been better to wear shoes with leather soles? What are your thoughts about shoes for dancing? Thanks, Jack

Dear Jack: If the floor was sticky, it could be one of two reasons, and definitely wearing rubber soles is one of them, and the other is if someone has spilt drinks on the floor and it wasn't cleaned up. The best shoes for men is also of personal preference. If you dance socially, leather-sole shoes will do; but if you dance and take classes at a performance level or dance at least 4-5 nights a week, you may want to consider ballroom dance shoes or jazz dance shoes for comfort and ease of doing shines. The only disadvantage with those shoes is you should only put them on in the clubs -- they are not for street wear.

July 22, 2001 An ex-torontonian and an advanced salsera is looking for accomodations in Toronto for the month of September (4/9 to 4/10). Might consider exchange for my house in San Francisco or hosting one guest in the future. I'm also a journalist and you might have read my article Salsa! reprinted in tosalsa or another salsa website. It's still at salsasf.com if you're interested. Please, get back to me if you have an apartment availa-ble or hear of one for sublet. (salsaloca_@hotmail.com or (415) 641-1436)

July 20, 2001 I'm planning a trip to Montreal in mid August and I was wondering if you know of any good salsa/latin clubs up there -- Desiree D.

Dear Desirree: I've asked Annie the Salsa Freak from Montreal for more info on the hot spots for each night, but the clubs I can think of off-hand are Salsatheque and Cubanos. You can also check out the Cityguides on www.salsaweb.com and www.salsafolie.com -- Rose Knows

July 20, 2001 Hi everyone! i am from hungary and i love cuban salsa very much! i met in hungary with sebastian from toronto and we dance salsa in budapest! if you know sebastian and his e-mail address, please send it me!!ciao salsera -- kismõdi enikõ

July 12, 2001 Are there any local Salsa Dance Competitions coming up this year?
-- Marcel

Dear Marcel: Apparently, there's a Park Avenue Latin Dance Show Competition starting August 1st with semi-finals on August 29th and the Finals on September 5th. If anyone wants to compete, they should contact Eddy @ 416-618-3984. First prize is a Trip to Cuba!

July 11, 2001 Do you have a latino dance club or salsa in Niagara Falls, my anniversary is coming up on Sat., August 4th. My husband and I love latin music, but
we are spending this occasion in Niagara Falls. If yes, please provide me with the phone and/or email to contact them for some arrangements. Thanks, Hana H.

Dear Hana: Hi, unfortunately I don't know of any clubs, my suggestion is to look at our Buffalo Travel Diaries as there was a club in Buffalo (about 1/2 hour drive from Niagara Falls?) Also, if you use www.google.com and search under niagara falls dancing -- you might find a dance school and then email or call them and ask if they know of anything. Hope that helps, and if you do find something, let us know! and I'll add it to the Travel Diaries section -- Rose Knows

July 10, 2001 HI! I saw the salsa groups on saturday at Toronto Street Fiesta and it was incredible. The songs used in the choreographs were excellent but my problem it's that I don't know the names of the songs/artist. Can you please help me to find the songs used by the groups because i want to buy them. Thanks for your help. -- Danilo
Dear Danilo: I'm glad you enjoyed the show. Here are some of the songs that we know...
1. Tito Puente - Swinging Mambo
2. Tito Puente - Ran Kan Kan
3. Tito Puente - Celia y Tito
4. Roberto Roena y su Apollo Sound - Que Se Sepa
5. Tito Puente - Baila Como Es

July 3, 2001 July 3, 2001
Rose: Have you ever considered using surnames in your reports on various
events? Many of our web browsers are not on a first-name basis with
everyone in the salsa community, and we would appreciate the full moniker of people mentioned in your musings. Most frustrating was reading about the Berlin competition through its elimination rounds where everyone was referred to only by their Christian names. -- Sharon Clark
Dear Sharon: How coincidental that you should ask that question when we were just pondering whether we should include full names for the performers in case some dancers would prefer to remain a little anonymous for safety reasons. In some cases I do try to put the full name, but in this dance scene it's difficult as many of us don't know the full name of fellow dancers, some may not want their name included, and it can be difficult trying to get information from organizers or having the time to run around to talk to the dancers to find out their full name. Also, because I'm also socializing while I'm out in-the-scene I don't always carry a pen and paper and rely on my "memory" of events that happen any given night; but I'll try my best in the future -- Rose Knows

July 1, 2001 Latin Clubs with Lessons
Rose, Would it be possible to add another listing with clubs offering salsa lessons, the lesson times and the nights? Thanks -- Anon.
Dear Anon: Under the full listing for clubs, we usually mention which clubs have classes, but I also did this other article about salsa classes. It changes so much that it's difficult to keep up -- Rose Knows

Dear Readers, we don't have always have all the answers,
so any feedback will be helpful to fellow dancers!
