| Jun 25, 2001 | I will be coming to Toronto the weekend of July 7th. I would love to correspond with anyone who enjoys dancing so when I come I'll be able to meet up with other dancers who enjoy dancing as I do. Can you help by sending my email out? I would certainly appreciate it. A little about myself: I live in Pennsylvania, have an intermediate level in Salsa, competed in April '01 Natural Body Building Contest of America (Tied 2nd place came in 3rd). Would love to dance with other (males) who enjoy the dance. -- Kara | ||

| Jun 21, 2001 | With
increasing interest in Latin salsa dancing here in TO, isn't it time to
spread the music to the underground house music club scene in Toronto, by
encouraging underground house/ acid jazz DJs here to play more salsa? Or
is it too premature yet? -- P.Chow |
Feedback from Khan -- Not Premature: This is in response to P.Chow's comment on playing salsa in more clubs. I don't think it is pre-mature to do so in clubs especially ones that play R&B, house, hip hop and reggae. Actually to tell you the truth I think some clubs are starting to play a salsa set along with their regular Hip hop R&b house and reggae. For example if you go to G spot on fridays and saturday nights the DJ will play a few salsa sets along with the regular sets of club music. On the other hand not everyone knows how to dance salsa and some will think they might feel left out but from what I can see the ones who didn't know how to dance salsa were still enjoying themselves watching the others dance and wanting to take lessons especailly after performing Casino Ruada with some friends that we learned from our instructor. SO the answer is yes they should include salsa sets along with their regular type of club music because salsa is moving into the main stream of clubbing and should be apart of the clubbing experience especially in a dance club.

| Jun 19, 2001 | Hello
from Halifax -- Hi, are there any plans to bring Salsa to Nova Scotia?
I'm a great fan of the dance and regularly attend venues when I'm home in
the U.K. I suffer terrible salsa-withdrawal symptons when I return to Canada.
I look forward to hearing from you-Many thanks Marilyn |
Dear Marilyn, I'm sorry to say that Toronto has no plans at present to bring Salsa to Nova Scotia -- I gather there isn't a large population of salsa dancers in Halifax or you wouldn't be "deprived". My suggestion is to find someone who loves dancing and convert them over to salsa and use instructional videos for training and practice. Possibly find a dance school that may start a salsa class and help dancers there catch the "fever" and watch your circle of dancers grow -- Rose Knows

| Jun 19, 2001 | In
the future, is there a better way to keep track of events like the one you
mentioned (Taste of Little Italy)??? It seems I never know where or when
they are??!!!! PS Can you recommend a place to get real dance shoes? I tried
Capezio thinking they'd stick to their roots, but they're off into the latest
fashions these days and mentioned they MIGHT have some ballet slippers stashed
in the back somewhere (!!!) -- Nadia |
Dear
Nadia, unfortunately, even for us, it's difficult to keep track
of everything that's going on in TO! We usually find out about events via
flyers, announcements, and surfing the web for the annual events, such as
the Harbourfront Festival or TLN at Canada's Wonderland; or from our Readers
who are kind enough to forward the info to us or ask us about something
they heard from the clubs; and then we call our circle of contacts to get
more info; and post it on our "What's Happening" section on the
home page. The ideal world would be if all the bands and promoters email
us way in advance of their event so we could post it, but either they don't
have the time to contact us or don't have an email address! Regarding dance shoes... it depends on what you're looking for. If it's practice shoes, then try Malabar or if it's high-heel ballroom shoes for the clubs, then try Dance Plus or Stardust for imported suede-sole shoes. I find ballroom dance shoes can last much longer than leather-soled shoes and can handle the wear and tear from spinning and splits! |

| Jun 18, 2001 | I'm
interested in an overall training in Salsa, but also the mambo, rumba, bolero
etc. i.e., basically cuban dance I guess. It seems to me I want a style
of Salsa that "breaks on 2" consistent with the mambo as well. Does anyone
teach the cuban spectrum here in TO? Thanks Richard. |
Dear Richard: I am not very familiar with the Cuban style of salsa, so maybe some of the Readers can help you out, or possibly call the Spanish Centre, I believe someone mentioned to me that the instructor is Cuban or you may want to call some of the instructors personally and talk to them for the "overall" spectrum -- Rose Knows

| Jun 17, 2001 |
Why
is salsa? I read you saying Mambo is making a comeback in Toronto over the last 3 years. Where? That's the place I want to find. All the dance
studios I have checked that are really "Into Latin" are only
"Into Salsa". And only into "break on 1" salsa. And
I don't want a real ballroom-y latin dance studio, I'm out to have some
fun dancing with my wife, work that rhythm, and that's about it. Had fun,
but I'm already starting to question the scene. 1st the provocation: Yes, the
advanced dance styles are very very, sharp... very very impressive, but
I don't think it's what I want. Today, has
Salsa hit the turning point, where the European March beats out the afrocuban
syncopations? Did it start in the 70's and 80's when Fania records marketed
"Salsa" as a new dance in NY? To sell it as a new thing to kids,
maybe they encouraged breaking with historical latin dance too much? Maybe it's
just the whole cuban dance package I'm after, period. Does anybody teach
that around here? Regards, Richard. |

| Jun 6, 2001 | Salsa Update in Hawaii -- Aloha to our friends from Hawaii. Its the first week of June and everyone is back from their Salsa trips. The feedback we have from those attending the LA conference was that it was too crowded, badly organized and getting too big. I couldn't attend because as some of you who saw me, I was back in Toronto during that week. For those who are coming here soon, the clubs that are hot here are Zanzabar in Waikiki, Banyans at Pearl Harbour, and Rumours at the Ala Moana Hotel. Send me an email if you are planning to visit. Hi there
Rose!!! I have been dancing salsa for about 1 year and 3 months and I love it. My first convention was in Washington, DC. LA was my second and I had a blast. There were lots of great danc-ers. The performers had wonderful outfits (two that I recall are a little revealing) and they did PERFORM!!! I don't like to sound negative, but here are some of the things that hopefully Albert Torres will improve for the next congress. These observations are shared by the people I spoke with at the West Coast Congress in LA. Space for dancing was a problem. The congress has outgrown Hollywood Park Casino. A new place is needed. Because of the dance space, problem dancers dance floor etiquette went out the window! I got hit so many times by dancers that just threw the woman across in my direction or by turning into me without watching their space. The set-up to watch the show was not organized properly. They had a few rows in front of the stage and about 30-50 rows on the SIDE of the stage. I would say only a few hundred got to enjoy the show and there were 3-4 thousand salseros and guests combined. The space for the workshops was inadequate. The instructors themselves were very frustrated especially Johnny Vasquez. Albert needs to address this BIG problem. People from all over the world are there for the performances and for the workshops and most didn't get to enjoy either to the fullest and this is a shame! If Albert doesn't address any of these concerns more people will shy away from the West Coast Congress. I visit your site for the overall content. I like the fact that you have a section for songs/cds to buy. I don't speak Spanish so this is helpful to me. When are
you going to post Alex's response? I run into his type and I laugh because
for a white boy I dance salsa the way "I" feel it and surpris-ingly
I get compliments from a lot of latinos!! The one's just like him are
on the sidelines boiling with envy. |

Teen Friendly Toronto Salsa Clubs Hi Rose& Ziv or anyone, My name is Hayley and I am 15. It's unusual, but I LOVE anything to do with Cuba: the people, the music, the island everything. You see the hard part is I live in Toronto and can't get over to Cuba as much I wish so I was wondering if there are any teen-friendly cuban-style salsa clubs??? If there are any Cubans reading this please respond and tell me about any good songs to salsa because I think I must have been cuban in another life because when ever I go there I feel like it's home...! Well If someone could get back to me it'd be great! :) Thanks, Hayl |
June 4th Info for Hayley from a Reader -- For great links to Cuba music, go to timba.com. If you want to learn Cuban style Salsa dancing or Casino, you have to look for the real thing. There are many instructors and dancers who pretend to dance Cuban Style, but they don't know what they are doing. Of course, they say they know how to dance Cuban style salsa, it's like saying your suit is from Italy or your coffee is from Brazil or Colombia. And don't be fooled by New York style Casino. There are few Cubans in Toronto, but our influence is growing !! There are now Cubans teaching Salsa in Plaza Flamingo (Fridays), El Convento Rico (Thursdays), Bamboleo (Saturdays). And these are free classes. Remember a few years ago people here used to laugh, when we danced and push off with our hands -- chino y cubano

20/01 Salsa Indian Jam Hey guys! How are you doin? Well I had a wonderful experience with salsa dancing a few weeks ago. I have been dancing salsa for about a year now and I concider myself a fairly good dancer. I am still taking classes trying to improve myself. I am of Pakistani-Persian descent, born here in T.O. I was dragged out to an Indian Jam by a female friend of mine who knows some salsa; she is a good average dancer and I grabed my jacket that had my salsa cd in my diskman. So reluctantly I went with her pouting and wanting to go to Babaluu's to get my fix. SO we get there and they are playing Bhangra (indian style music with hard drums and bass and classical quick pase Indian music) along with the regular hip hop and R&B. So for the whole night I was dancing the same way everyone else did at the club to the bhangra hip hop. I was getting extremely bored and I had that uncontrolable salsa itch. So I walked up to the DJ who is a really good friend of mine during a bhangra set and gave him a salsa cd (Yuri Buenventura) and I told him play the first song on this CD called "Salsa!" now before I explode!. So he looks at me and laughs and says "This is gonna be funny, I wonder how the 99% East Indian Crowd will react". So I get back on the floor and grab my friend, she looks at me with the strangest look; then the salsa music started to play and she smiled at me and we start dancing salsa. I was so pumped up I think this is the best salsa performance I've ever had. The jam-packed crowd in disbelief made room for us to dance and they stopped everything just to watch us "burn the floor" (hahaha). They were in awe of the simple moves that we were executing, then I pulled out all the neat tricks; and they started to cheer, hoot and holler. After the song was over, I had many people coming up to me asking me about salsa and where to go to learn. I just said TOsalsa.com and umm guys I never had so many phone numbers from women in my entire life *smile* This is the power of salsa! Thanks for everything, lots of love from Khan |

May 11/01 I took casino classes at a reputable Salsa dance school in Toronto. Then, I went to Cuba for a vacation. I was very lost there. In Cuba they used different calls and the basic steps were completely different. My Casino teachers in Canada learned Casino in New York, not Cuba. So, I understand when people say here that the Casino they teach in Canada is not authentic. My advice is go to Cuba for Casino or learn Casino from somebody Cuban or who has learned from Cubans. Also, I realized a lot has to do with separation of Cuba and the United States. Casino in Cuba continued to evolve in Cuba, while Casino in the United States remained stagnant. There was not regular contact between the United States and Cuba for many years. I watched clips from 2001 Mayan Dance contest. The Mayans did not conquer South America as the website says. Are you sure this was a Salsa dance competition? It seemed like a Latin Ballroom, Swing or Jive competition. As a Mexican girl, I have to admit Cubans dance Salsa better. The Latinos who danced in the Mayan Dance competition are very Americanized. I don't consider them 100% Mexicans. They are chicanos or pochos, because really Salsa is not famous in Mexico. I am sorry if I made many mistakes in English -- One Mexican living in Toronto |

| May 3, 2001 | Thanks Rose -- I just wanted to thank you for posting up my e-mails about Cuban dancing. Far from being a silly debate. I thought it was very fruitful. I think I learned a lot and I think even the people who disagreed with me learned something too. I think you have done a lot to promote Cuban music and Casino in Toronto (unlike other websites in Toronto about Salsa). I don't agree with the reader who says you favor some instructors and not others. It is just some instructors are willing or able to promote themselves more than others. In this era of political correctness, it more important than ever to find the truth, get the whole story and compare both sides. I hope many can take the journey to learn and keep an open mind. I would urge other Canadians to learn Spanish and go to a Latin country, not only New York and Los Angeles or Puerto Rico. I think for many Cuba would be an eye opener. And don't go where the tourists go -- Jo Kim | Dear
Jo Kim, Thank you for opening up the doors to such an interesting
discussion/debate. To this day, I still can't believe we're still getting
responses 5 months later since it was first posted! It just shows you how
passionate we all are about our dancing and it has shown me also that many
dancers do take the time to research/read/ study the history of salsa dancing.
It's funny you should mention that we should learn Spanish and go to a latin
country, because many of my friends have already started that journey over
a year ago and it's been on my own wishlist of many things to do, especially
now that I've started my journey to understand the history of the music
and its influences. Regarding favoring some instructors over others, you hit it dead on! and yes, everyone should try to look at both sides of every story before they jump quickly to conclusions -- that's why I felt strongly about posting those emails as it wasn't the first time it has been mentioned to me through other dancers. But if we all felt the same way about everything, the world would be rather boring, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions! Rose Knows... |

| Apr 26, 2001 | Last Thursday, I was a Latin club just standing around. There was this guy, if you go out a lot you have probably him. He was been dancing for years in the old same way. I think he missed the cross body lead train of a few years ago. So, to make up for this, he does a lot of spins and dips. I was respecting his area of dancing and I just a turned my back on him for a second. Then he screamed, "Will you get out of the way ?" in his squeaky voice. He was attempting a dip where he holds the girl by just two hands. I gave him enough room for spins and her normal dips, but apparently give him enough room for his special dip. I wanted to suggest he take some lessons and learn how to dance, but I didn't. He probably thinks is he Salsa God and can't learn anything. Do women like dips where the guy just holds her by the hands or by the neck? They don't do dips in Cuba -- Jo Kim | Dear Jo Kim, When it comes to dips and tricks -- it's entirely up to each girl's personal preference on whether she likes them or not. Also, for dancers who don't know how to execute or follow them correctly -- they shouldn't even attempt them on the dance floor as it can get fairly dangerous for themselves and the dancers around them. For myself personally, I do like them when they're executed properly and you're not interfering with other dancers' floor space. In this particul-ar scenario, it sounds like he was rather rude and just wanted to show off or maybe like you said, he really didn't know anything else except dips and tricks which is only a small portion of what dancing is all about -- Rose Knows | |

| Apr 26, 2001 | Hi TOsalsa, I read somewhere that Rose said she was Latina in a past life as a joke. Why should this be a joke? I was born and raised in the small Chinese community in Havana, Cuba. I consider myself Cuban although I look Chinese. I can't speak Chinese, although my Spanish is better than most of the Canadian-Latinos here. In Canada, we say we try to respect all races and nation-alities here. But some Canadians have some stereotypes about what a Latino should look like. I am sure although I can't prove it, many women have turned me down to dance, because they think I can't dance because I look Chinese, even though I can dance better than most Latinos here. Or they think I dance like the Chinese or filipinos here (no offense, they dance well but they have a ballroom thing going on here). I have a friend from Argentina, born and raised in Buenas Aires, but her parents are from Korea. The largest community of Japanese people outside Japan is in San Paulo, Brazil. So, remember, when you talk about someone who is Latino, you are talking about many people from different races -- Chino y Cubano | Dear
Reader: Hello, I'm sorry if I offended you, but it was only a phrase
as most readers would probably guess, I'm Chinese Canadian, but have learned
to love everything and anything to do with salsa and the latin culture.
This was just a "joke" or a way of expressing myself since the DJ could
not believe I even knew that song. And I think it's amazing that there's
Chinese in Cuba! Sorry this is so brief, but I'm packing for New York and
I've got to go before I'm late. Take Care, Rose Knows... As FYI -- this
was the story I wrote... Special Mention of this great classic, El Gran
Combo - La Fiesta de Pilito, which I heard at the Toronto Salsaweb Convention
and only found out (thanks to Javier Espinoza of oursalsathing.com) the
name of this great tune. Funny side note: I asked a latin DJ at Smokey Joe's
on a Monday to play this song and he gave me the funniest look in total
surprise that I even knew it as it was at least 10 years old! Should have
mentioned I was latino in another lifetime! Update as of May 5th -- Now that I have a little more time, being 1st generation Chinese Canadian, I also had my problems with people with chinese stereotypes and dealing with their ignorance and jealousy about my own culture; but at the same time, it doesn't mean we can't laugh at ourselves or our own race and its idiosyncracies. Life is too short! |

| Apr 24, 2001 | Bad experience? Hmmm well I will probably get some people a tad bit mad here maybe it is my lack of experience in the salsa scene, so please forgive me but I had a bad dancing experience. Yeah I know who hasn't when they first start out. Well I was at a salsa social the other day and a beautiful young lady asked me to dance. Of course I said yes and we proceeded to dance, but the only thing she did was dance on one spot moving her feet and not moving around as I tried to lead her -- it was like she was stuck there doing some fancy footwork and I tried to accomodate her I went down on one knee as I moved her from left to right while sticking my leg out as she moved to either side she gave me a look like I was doing something strange. Yes there are times where ladies would look at me trying to figure out what am I doing? Now my instructor just came from Cuba, he was born and raised there and he is teaching me what he knows from there and what he teaches me is free form like do anything and enjoy. I have also encountered ladies telliuseing theory from Bruce Lees Jeet Kune Do Kung fu and applying it to salsa dancing. JKD is a martial art created by Bruce, it's main philosophy is don't be restricted when it comes to the arts learn as much as you can apply as much as you can from taking from different styles. This will make you a better artist because you are free. I love learning different styles and flowing freely I can't understand why people have to be so restricted. | Apr 11, 2001 | The time is near for my departure to Hawaii. I wanted to tell all of you that knew me for the last year in the salsa scene in Toronto that I had a blast. The interest in Salsa in Toronto has definitely put us on the map. Just go to Tequila lounge, Baba'lu, Courthouse, Left Bank, Ivory, Park Avenue on their salsa nights and the momentum is ever-present. A lot of this can be attributed to the hard work of the Salsa teachers and their pupils Groups such as United Salseros, Los Salsamanos, Strictly Salsa, Soles now have their own growing followings. I would also like to acknowledge, Arthur Ga and Eloisa Tobias (of SalsaPicante) who have spent many hours of their time to teach and give me the appreciation that I now have for Salsa dancing. | Apr 9, 2001 | Hola
Rose, The Berlin 2001 Salsa Competition was great! I was impressed by some of the calibre of dancing from the amateurs... especially Paul and Josephine. I knew that they'd win. :) Their creativity and connection was highly evident. In the semi-pro category, I was happy that Marc Anthony and Mona won. I've seen both of them dance in the clubs and they certainly have that latin flava goin' strong! And, I was ecstatic with the win in the pro division by Stephanie and Oren. I've attended a few of Stephanie's workshops and she's amazing! Her love for the music really shows in her dancing. Her technical skills, style, showmanship were fabulous. She had the best partner connection and timing that I have ever seen, and their dancing was clean and smooth. As for Ivy and Dora...what a team! They were extraordinary! They deserve two enthusiastic thumbs up for their awesome footwork and daring! I'm looking forward to next year's showcase of Toronto talent! jenn!4 |

| Apr 6, 2001 | Hi! First, I live in Chicago, and I have to congratulate you on a excellent site; I personally used it as a resource for Toronto clubs during my visit. I need some help on finding a song that I heard at Babulus and Palazzo, I did not have the opportunity to ask the DJ for the name but it is an excellent song that I am looking to buy. The song is a samba and it starts with "ledo ledo ledo la". Both times that I have hear it the DJ played it following another samba from the Dance With me CD. I know that this is not much help towards identifying the song but any help would be appreciated Thank you in advance, Walter. | Dear Readers/DJ's: If you know this song, please let us know! | |

am a Cuban woman who has recently moved here. But my husband is not Cuban.
So, he and I wanted to take some casino classes together, so that he could
learn and we could spent some time together. But I was very disappointed
with all of the Casino classes we took here. They advertise Casino, but
it not really the authentic. It was New York style, or California style
salsa with the Cuban calls or choreography added in. Casino is NOT just
when many couples dance together. Casino can be danced with just one couple.
It is style of dance. It is how Cubans dance to Salsa. If you want to learn
Casino, you have to forget what you learned with other styles of Salsa dancing.
The basic steps, the spins, how you move your body is very different. For
example, most teachers here teach the "guapea" (when the man does a reverse
"mambo" step and pushes off with his hands with his partner) incorrectly.
Almost everybody here, after they push off their partner hands, they freeze
and start to pose like a fashion model. What's is that? That would be okay,
if they did in time so that they could push off again, but they don't. I
think other styles of Salsa are nice, but I think if you want to teach Casino,
you have to learn from Cubans. Most of Salsa teachers here learned Casino
in the United States. Many people here who learn Casino in Toronto are lost
dancing with Cubans in Cuba. I just wanted to say if you want to learn Casino
here, buyer beware - Cecelia |

Dancing Shoe -- I enjoy dancing to salsa music. The problem is having
a comfortable shoe. I never see any posting regarding dancing wear in Toronto
area. Please tell me where in Toronto I can get salsa shoe to buy? Thanks
Claudette |
Dear Claudette: Unfortunately, this is one of the areas we realize we have not spent any time on; and the reply to this question could be lengthy. The short version is many dancers do buy ballroom shoes as they are more comfortable and sturdy. There are quite a few brands available, usually imported from England and Italy, such as Internat-ional, Supadance, etc. There are a few places that sell them in Toronto, such as Stardust and Dance Plus. If you are more into shines and practice shoes, you can check out Malabar's for jazz shoes.

About partner search -- Hi Rose! First of all let me compliment you on your
site, it's excellent!!! I really appreciate the time you put into it as
it is very informative and regularly updated, I'm always sure to check it
when I plan a salsa night!!!! Just a question about the Partner search and
its delay? The summers coming and I'd really love to find someone whos as
addicted to salsa as me. I've been taking dance lessons and hope to finish
the intermediate courses (as per Soles dance studio) by May. Without an
avid dance partner who I can practice with, my lessons will be largely for
naught (it's one thing to learn a move, and a whole other story to perfect
it, without practice, I can't perfect it...) Please have the partner search
up before the summer months, it would be a HUGE help for us new salseros
who need a dance partner. I'm always forced to drag my non-salsa friends
to salsa clubs, and they're really not as enthusiastic about it as me, so
please help us newbies out. Thanks, and again, keep up the great work!!!

Hi I was wondering if you could provide us in Ottawa with more details about
this Salsaweb reunion in May. We were there last year and had a ball (we
were third in the semi-pro competition). It was such a great experience.
The Wepa site is all wrong or empty of info, it even says the reunion is
supposed to be in March! I was wondering if you had been in contact with
anyone and have details. Like prices, etc...as the time is approaching rapidly.
I'm sure a lot of people from around here and Montreal would like to join.
Thank you for your time - Catherine |

Update: The Toronto Salsaweb Reunion is now postponed until further notice! Dear Catherine: I've emailed the organizer in Washington who's updated the Salsaweb Reunion page, but the prices and the schedule are not yet finalized. |

Dear Readers: Sometime ago, I did write in my column that some fitness clubs do offer salsa aerobics or latin aerobics to salsa and cha cha music. Right now the only club I'm aware of that offers both is my club called Lifesport Fitness at Yonge & St. Clair. Giovanni teaches a salsa aerobics class on Friday and Saturday. If anyone else knows of any other classes in the City of Toronto, please let me know.

Reader from Calgary wrote... March 16, 2001 Hi Rose, thanks for the info on the videos. I'll definitely check them out. I'm a recent addition to your mailing list as I have only found your website a few weeks ago while surfing the web for salsa info. Your web site is great, very informative. I love hearing about all the events happening in Toronto. Actually the salsa scene in TO sounds like so much fun it makes me want to move there! (Cuba would be my first choice but I don't think that I would enjoy all the political restrictions). Calgary in comparison is really an embarrassment. None the less I'd love to write a synopsis for you. I hope you don't mind, but I'll have it ready for you in April, as currently I'm swamped with school work. Keep up the good work on your website. dancer from Toronto & I'm now living in Jamaica & teaching dancing here.
We have come a long way as Salseros & I would like to enter some of my students
in Salsa contests. Whats happening there, are there any Salsa Competitions
coming up? Please let me know. I'll continue to read your newsletter & keep
up the good work. Keith PS Stephanie Gurnon was my dance instructor/partner and good friend. |
Dear Keith, Sorry I took so long to write back it's been crazy busy, just go to our home page and you'll find a link to the Berlin competition and we also have listed some other contests that are driving distance to TO -- Ottawa and Detroit. Rose

Hi, I went
to a Latin dance club in another city and saw salsa. I loved it! The problem
is I am a woman of size and though I am pretty and a good dancer, no one
will ever ask me to dance. So I have no opportunity to learn salsa. Though
it might sound impossible to think I can learn salsa without a partner,
I want to try so that at least I can dance to the music in my own home.
Is there a website that explains the basic moves? Also of the Salsa video's
which do you recommend? The area I live in , Mobile, Alabama, has no group
salsa instruction and I cannot afford private instruction. I appreciate
any advice you can offer. Thank you. Kelly |

I was interested in ordering videos on-line which teach salsa moves both for couples and individual shines. I'm looking for something at an intermediate to an advanced level. Can you recommend any specific ones I could check out or instructors I should look for. Thank you. Salsa Fanatic in Calgary |
Dear
Salsa Fanatic in Calgary: It's nice
to know that there are salsa addicts in Calgary! I actually wrote an email
around Christmas about what videos would be great as a gift. Here they are
again: 1. Josie Neglia -- LA-style Salsa. 2. Eddie Torres (New York on 2) 3. Razz-M-Tazz (New York on 2) 4. Salsa Brava (LA Salsa) 5. Edie the Salsa Freak's Cool Moves Vol. 2 Salsa Video (best value with 60? cool moves on one tape!) Rose Knows... |

Hi! I am
new to TOsalsa.com! I learned Salsa when I was living in Warsaw last year
(there is a big following there) and even headed to The Havana Club in
Vienna for Christmas (incredible bar with amazing dancers!). Being new
to the scene here, having no partner and not knowing any others who love
to dance Salsa, I am not sure how to get involved in Toronto's scene.
Are the workshops open to individuals without partners?? Is there any
place I can find out any more info.? Thanks!! Kathy |
Dear
Kathy: Welcome to Toronto!
I'm glad you found our site, probably
one of the quickest ways to get involved in Toronto's dance scene is by
going to some of the classes
offered in the clubs and/or workshops which is listed below on our home
page. You don't need a partner to join in, but remember workshops are usually
for intermediate to advanced dancers. -- Rose

Dear Readers: I have forwarded this email to Jennifer who is the organizer of the Berlin competition for further clarification. There is definitely a fineline between the three levels, but necessary as there are many dancers who presently do not fully qualify as Amateur (dancers who do not teach or perform for no pay) or Professional (since they are paid to teach/ perform full-time).

| Jan 15, 2001 | "Where to go?! Dear TOsalsa, I just checked out your site and it is great! I'd been looking for one for over a year through Toronto.com but I guess there isn't a link because I never found it. Here's my question: Where is a good, UNPRETENTIOUS, smoke-free or mostly, place for over 40's who LIKE cumbia-style salsa?! OK, I know I've just dated and typed myself! I'm quite willing to learn more about other styles but smokey clubs filled with young show-offs don't work for me. I've been dancing salsa for years and love it but when I go out to dance, I often don't. I've just come back from San Francisco where the attitude is SO different. Even though they dance LA style and I'm not that great at it, I never stopped dancing all night the three nights I went out dancing. Guys of all ages and types asked me to dance, including instructors and all were fun and friendly! We have a long way to go in that department in Toronto! Any other old-timers out there who just wanna dance? Where shall we meet?! Thanks for the chance to chat!" -- Liz | Dear
Liz: I'm glad you finally found
us. I guess if you used a search engine, like www.google.com and typed in
"Toronto Salsa", you would have found us sooner. Anyways, regarding
where to dance cumbia-style salsa with an older crowd -- the only place
that comes close to that description is El Rancho's on Fridays. Hope that
helps... Rose Dear Readers, any other clubs I might have missed? Let me know! |

"Can someone please briefly explain the difference between LA styling, Cuban style, New York Style, etc. I've just recently re-entered the dance scene and am a bit confused about all the different styles that have cropped up. Thanks." -- Old-Timer |
Dear Reader: We will hopefully have a story in a future article on the different styles of salsa. To give you my best interpretation without getting too technical, I think Cuban style would be similar to the old Toronto style of dancing a few years back called cumbia-style (more side to side with a rock step) and they break on "1". LA style is the forward and backward salsa and breaks on the "1". It's also very flashy with a lot of tricks. Regarding New York style, it's also backward and forward salsa, but breaks on "2". It's a less showy style for men, but gives women more chance to include styling. Another style is Casino-style Salsa from Miami, where couples form a circle, and one dancer calls out different moves and in unison, the dancers execute the moves with the same partner, and/or switches to the next partner in the circle. Hope that helps-- Rose Knows...

Thanks for
providing the vehicle to express opinions about Salsa. Your web site is
a virtual community for salsaholics. |
Hi
Mario, You're most welcome... as you know, most salsaholics love the opportunity
to talk and express their opinions about dancing... When you're in the clubs,
who has time, you're too busy dancing plus you'd have to yell someone's
ear off for them to hear you... Plus, isn't it interesting to read other
people's opinions about dancing. When you put dancers together over dinner,
coffee or drinks, they love to debate about dancing, compare dance styles,
who they enjoy dancing with the most, and so on... By saying we'll be better people, well that brings us one step closer to being just human beings with feelings and real lives and not just dancers. Think about your dancing friends, do you know what they do in their "other life"? Take care, RoseKnows. |
