But I found DJ richies comments a phenomena for me. My father comes from the Cayman Islands, My mother Was from Cuba. Her mother was from Jamaica... Thus I have relative there.... MY mother and father were separated although my father was part of my life... My mother was overwhemingly the major cultural influence in my life; To the extent that i've been a salsa musician for over 20 years- gigged with Casonova, conjunto Cache, Angelo y su conjunto modelo, Ray Ramos, Tipica New York, Orquesta Sublime, the original LA sorpresa, to name a few. I had no idea that Salsa could or would exist in Jamaica... I 've found that Jamaican music-either was usally out of tune/pitch and/or boring. But The message in reggae is very vital and I'm sure harmonically it will grow and musically expand. DJ Richie..... Please give me some info.. so that if I go back to JA... I'll know where to go and what nights.... Please reply....tks -- Bobby December

Three other favorites of mine are: Acabo de Llegar, Alex Leon; La Burga de Panama; and Bilongo/La Negra Tomasa. I'm not sure of the artists of La Burga and Bilongo, as I've heard them played primarily by a local band, and because they're classics, and have been remade.

I hear it all the time but don't know who the singers are. I would be so grateful if you know. Thanks! -- Ju Yu August 25, 2003 -- Timba
I am not a DJ, Musician or anything of the sort. I live in NY where
of course there is a major on 2 scene. I got into salsa by visting Cuba.
I have now been there 4 times. I understand that this is my opinion..
I love timba. I search and search for clubs that play it in NY but generally
if they even bother to play Cuban music it's almost never timba. When
i go to clubs like Nells it seems that everyone is so ballroom that
they are not having fun no smiles nothing. In cuba there is nothing
but fun and smiles when they dance and the way they dance nothing compares
to it for me. I agree that timba is more complex and a little harder
to dance to but once you get used to it there is no better high. It
is exciting, different and sexy. I just don;t feel the same way about
other tyoes of salsa they don't move me. I also love rueda. My love
for rueda and timba are at the point where I am considering trying to
open up my own club night once a week for free rueda lessons and timba
music. It is a little depressing though being such a minority. August 19, 2003 -- Top 10 Hello, I am Kai...17 Years Old Ald i Live In The Netherlands. i am a HUGE salsa Fan, But my Question Is, If it is Possible to Make your own Top 10 List...And Send it to you! I have Some GREAT Salsa Songs... Grupo Gale,
Grupo Niche,La Sonora Carruseles...EveryThing! Greetz Kai. August 7, 2003 -- To Someone who cares Take it easy to SOMEONE WHO CARES. Don't be so embarassed. Celia Cruz was a great singer. But many people die everyday. Many great musicians who were more responsible for creating salsa music have died in recent years but most people didn't recognize them. Celia Cruz had great talent, but she was also fortunate to move to the United States when the great era of Fania was happening. It was because of these records that she became famous. Most Cubans didn't know of her when suddenly she became famous in the United States. She has always been more important to Latin Americans in United States, Mexicans, to Central Americans and South Americans than to Cubans. Remember when she acted in movies and telenovelas ?(like El alma no tiene color). She was always happy and full of energy. She was someone who Latin American people could embrace and accept, while in real life many white Latin or mestizos found it difficult to accept their African Latin American bothers and sisters. Her stance against Castro put in her line with most Cuban extremist exiles in Miami. But in the end, such unrelenting ideology prevented her from going back to Cuba. A country which she dearly loved. In her last performances, this longing for Cuba certainly came out as if she knew she wasn't going to live long. This I find trully sad. She was a great artist and person. But why berate Rose for not putting full page ads in the Toronto Star? You seem to have more time than she does. Besides, you may adore Celia Cruz, but probably you don't know who Benny More is. Benny More was greatest singer Cuba has ever produced. Benny More should be above Celia Cruz in any pantheon of great singers. -- Chincub August 5, 2003 -- Don Catalino "Tite" Curet Alonso Saludos, Familia... Please all, say a prayer for the soul of one of the greatest Puerto Rican composers of all time, Don Catalino "Tite" Curet Alonso, who died this afternoon in Baltimore, Maryland at the age of 77. Que descanse en paz, www.djlacoqui.com Con sabor Boricua, Ivette August 4, 2003 -- Hello, I need to know the album and record label for Los Dan Den out of Columbia's Mi Cuerpo. Please let me know ASAP. Regards, Alison, Jamaica August 3, 2003 -- Celia Cruz T.O.SALSA, I
am very disappointed in all of you and this whole website. For someone
who claims to love salsa; its culture, its beauty and its people, its
hard to see how the death of a legend was overlooked. I was surprised
to find absolutely nothing on the passing of Celia nor was there a memorabilia
of recognition of her accomplishments on this website. Im from Toronto,
and this website is transmitted throughout the whole world. I find it
an embarassment for the salsero side of Toronto to have overlooked this.
Musicians like Celia are the ones who put you people on your feet and
have fueled your passion for salsa. All of the other worthy salsa websites
have stopped in their tracks and at least recognized all she has done
to mould the salsa world. Rose, you should know better. You're so caught
up in Puerto Rico and the Salsa congress that you couldn't even use
your medium to pay tribute. Im disappointed and I just hope that all
of you there at TO SALSA would get your head out of the clouds and remember
what you're here for. Thank You... Someone Who Cares August 3, 2003 -- Salsa CD's Rose, I'm new to Orlando area and looking for Latin music store where I could buy new and classic records. I know they have a date at Lula Lounge coming up, but I'd like to see them before that if possible. -- Paul July 31, 2003 -- Spanishgoodies.com Do not reccommend spanishgoodies.com to anyone. They took my online order and charged my credit card, I even got a personal e-mail from Ray Cortez when it did not go through the first time. your site quite a bit. Great job. July 2, 2003 -- New Forum: Radio Airplay Hi folks, I was following your discussion who is the better salsa singer, and the problem of radio airplay came up. As a matter of fact, I agree completely that some of the best soneros out there don't get radio airplay in the US. This includes Frankie Vasquez and Herman Oliveira, among others, and it is a shame!!! I come from Germany and we have an organisazion of German salsa DJ's with a monthly charts website. Our regular top10 hitters are Wayne Gorbea, Son Boricua, Eddie Palmieri, Africando, Spanish Harlem, Susie Hansen etc etc etc. No chance for Victor Manuelle, Marc Anthony, La India and all the other commercial stuff. Now I wonder why all of these aforementioned artists, most of them from New York, have to go to Europe to see their music widely appreciated? -- Roberto June 28, 2003 -- Good Wedding reception Salsa songs?

Could you help me out? March 31, 2003 -- bachata lyrics Dear TOSalsa, I am a teaching assistant at Cornell University who leads a section for a World Musics class. We are currently learning bachata, and I was curious if you could tell me where I can get English translations of bachata lyrics. I don't speak Spanish, and any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Dimitri Shapovalov Dear Dimitri, I don't think I've found a site yet that translates bachata lyrics just because of the time involved in translation and the fact that most readers who have posted the spanish lyrics are usually doing it by listening to the song as most record labels cannot afford to post lyrics in their albums. The spanish music genre does not have the same budget and marketing dollars as these big record labels along with the millions of copies sold; so most of us rely on the passionate lovers of salsa music to provide these lyrics from all over the world. My suggestion would be to copy whatever lyrics you would like translated into a free website translation service, such as www.freetranslation.com and you'll get the "gist" of what the song is about... unless you have some spanish friends who have time to sit with you and type out their interpretation of what the song is singing. I was browsing your site and I think you have room for many other salsa and merengue lyrics.. I happen to sing at a salsa club here in Puerto Rico and am constantly searching for lyrics. I thought you might want to add some of my own. I just want to say that your site is simple, easy and hassle-free, and that I have never sent these lyrics to anyone. I just use them when I perform. I guess I appreciate how fast and easy I found what I was looking for. Besides, it's nice to know that salsa music reaches and has fans in other countries. Enjoy. Jose, Puerto Rico March 6, 2003 -- The song for the people in Arizona! After I watched the video clip I remembered ... On a cold winter night with a hard blowing blizzard, a very talented percussionist by the name of "Edwin Bonilla" from Florida gave us the privilege to hear him play in Toronto. Not too many people could attend this concert at the "Lula Lounge", and boy did they miss this runaway freight train. The clave was pounding so hard that the name out front was reading "--La Lounge" !! The name of the song is "Recordando Las Descargas". Sorry no sound clips on this link. -- Dj Salsero March 5, 2003 -- Buenavista - Que Buena Baila Usted. . . Well, I know the song in my subject heading quite well, but there is a song being played here in Arizona, as well as in Chicago that last time I was home {burr...cold!!} At any rate, this song reminds me of the Buenavista version, but it is more up to date with a serious piano riff throughout the song. . . any ideas??? Sorry I don't have more information to go upon, DJ's don't share information out here when you ask them questions about that songs that thye are playing. :( -- Rob March 5, 2003 -- Song From?!?
I too just like Nick (post from February 18th 2003) am looking for the
song to this video. March 5, 2003 -- responce to Christina of March 4 Hi, The song name is "Aisha", artist Khaled(i think spelling is right), but its not salsa, its oriental...considering we are talking the same song here... tanya March 5, 2003 -- The song with the word "Aicha" is by the band Africando, the same group that had their greatest hit with "Yay boy". A little sample of the song with this link . Dj Salsero March 4, 2003 -- Aicha is from the Aficando album Baloba. Thanks for the tips, Rose. I can't wait! Gorillas dancing with Peacocks? I'm bringing my camera. love -e, NYC March 4, 2003 -- lyrics "La gallinita de los huevos de oro" Hello all, I'm a Belgian Salsa-lover and beginning to learn Spanish. The text of "La gallinita de los huevos de oro" sung by "Grupo Niche" intriges me. Does anyone have the lyrics? Greetings, Stefan March 4, 2003 -- Hi Rose - I need help finding a salsa song - the one word that is repeated throughout the song is a woman's name "Aisha or Ayisha" or something that sounds like that - if you or one of your readers happens to know the actual name of this song and the artist? Thanks a million Rose - Christina March 3, 2003 -- DJ Salsero is the best! I just want to write that DJ Salsero is the best Salsa/Merengue/Bachata DJ en la grand ciudad! I correspond with him regularly about his sets, what songs he plays, etc. When I go to a salsa club, I go to see if the DJ can inspire me to jam. The better the DJ, the better the jam. They are performing as much as we are; only they get paid. They are hired to fill the clubs with dancers. If the DJ sucks, the good dancers don't go to that club. You can follow most of the regulars by going to the clubs with the best DJs. Hey guess what!?! DJ Salsero DJs at two of the nights that most of the regulars (a.k.a. the best dancers) go every week! The Courthouse and Left Bank. Hmmmmmm.... maybe I'll go there more often? If I want to become a better dancer I have to check out what the local talent is up to. But it's still all about the music, and what the best, most skilled (song selection and beat MIXING) DJs are doing. Josh March 3, 2003 -- NO ME ACUERDO can you please post a song lyric for me? i would like you to post the song, "que rica bomba te traigo yo" by no me acuerdo. thank you. Christopher March 3, 2003 -- tipica 73 Got to respond to the cat from The U.K. who wrote that Tipica 73 was probably the best New York band in the 70's. AMEN! Good to here them get some props. They were Jazzy, funky, traditional, and inovative. Their records are still a total thrill to dance to. Even here in New York where you can't avoid "El Canario" if you tried, DJs dont play them nearly enough. "La Candela" the album which "Canuto" is on is a masterpiece. Good lookin' out Kid! -- Eddie March 3, 2003 -- Music Hi. I am hoping you can help me as I have exhausted all other resources. I am looking to find the salsa version of "Malaguena Salerosa" that I heard played at a club once. Ever since, I have not been able to find it (already checked the web). If
you know who sings it or where I can download it, or at least order
it, could you please let me know? (I have already tried Super Latin
Music and they don't have it either). Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank-you! Brenda March 3, 2003 -- Lyrics needed I need lyrics to a song that La India and Celia Cruz sung together. It is in the album called La India's greatest hits. It is song #12 and unfortunately I don't know the name of the song. Fred March 2, 2003 -- Help? Hi i am writing to you because i really like a song but i dont know what the name of it is or the artist who sings it. I'm pretty sure it should be in one of your lists so maybe you can help me. The song goes like this "en las nuves, en el cielo (I think),..... que te quieroooooooo. I know its not much information and im not even sure if it goes like that but any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Hazel March 2, 2003 -- Hi Rose, Love the site! I'm a huge fan of salsa and thanks to your many "top salsa" lists I've been building up a nice collection of songs. I have a question about a song that I've been trying to find. As I'm not a Spanish native, all I know are a few words here and there. The song was used by Rudy Zalez and Jennifer Silva in their final routine at the Mayan 2002 pro competition. From what I could understand it starts off "oye mama no quede" and then repeats "que yo juega la peroja (peroca?)" throughout the song. I was hoping you or one of your readers might be able to help me find the song. Thanks! Keep up the great work! ~Linda March 4, 2003 -- The song that Rudy Zales and Jennifer Silva used in the Viagra routine is called "La Pelota" by Ray Barretto one the most renowned conga players/percussionist of our time. His contribution to Salsa as a song writer/band leader is equivalent to the greats such as Tito Puente. http://www.descarga.com/cgi-bin/db/7952.10?7bePKRmW;;173 I am a huge fan of his work and recently been playing a superset of my own from three of his songs at the Court House. Dj Fab March 2, 2003 -- What's the name of this song? Please help! Dear Rose: I was wondering if you could kindly help me out here. I am looking for this song - very popular among competitive dancer. Rudy Zalez used this song in his "Viagra" performance at the 2002 Mayan ( I'm referring to the fast song that only started after he took the viagra ), also Orville and Ana used the same song in their 2002 San Francisco Competition. If you happen to know what song it is, please do kindly let me know!!! Thanks for much for your time and your help. Sincerely, Siti March 4, 2003 -- Dear TOsalsa, The name of the song is "La Pelota" by Ray Barretto (http://www.descarga.com/cgi-bin/db/7952.10?UN6cWMwJ;;152). I love Chayanne's "Y tu te Vas" but I cannot find the lyrics anywhere. If you could post them, or email them to me, it would be great. Thanks a lot, Joanne February 27, 2003 -- Hi Rose. i believe the answer to the artist and song, question posted by someone yesterday, is a newer song by Pedro Jesus called Mala Mala . Another wicked newer song that i can totally see being used in competitions in the near future is Chico Vacilon by Los Adolescentes. You gotta check that one out. Hi, I'm writing from Ottawa. I missed the concert by D'Talle in Ottawa
but do you know if they're playing in Montreal sometime soon. I know
there's a concert in Toronto Feb 28 but I'm looking for something closer
to Ottawa. Thanks Tom February 21, 2003 -- Salsa in Havana Cuba Hi Rose, I am a beginner when it comes to Salsa. I have taken lessons at the local Toronto clubs, Plaza Flamingo, El Ranco, the Left Bank and the Courthouse. At the classes I learned the steps. With each partner I learned a new pattern and to my pleasure I am usually able to follow without stepping on anyone's toes! Cross body leads, mambo steps, no problem for me. In Toronto I learned steps and patterns but I did not learn to feel the music. I did not feel the soul of salsa until I went to Havana, Cuba. In Cuba, the people live and breath the music from birth and the best salsa dancers will take your breath away. In Havana, I had the good fortune of meeting a professional dance teacher named Sony Perez. I had a real life "Dance with Me" experience. Just like the movie, I was Vanessa Williams counting steps and Sony was Chayanne, encouraging me to feel the music and let my body free. After several lessons and some concentration I was able to relax and let myself be led by this amazing dancer. I had the most wonderful experiences dancing with Sony at the hottest clubs in Havana. Casa de la Musica in Old Havana is a must visit. Here you will dance to live music performed by talented Cuban artists. The best time for me was a farewell dance with Sony at the Havana airport. We danced to Salsa music performed by a live band, Grupo Aeroson. Sony had me turning under and around, feeling the beat of the bongos and even lifted me off the floor on his back never once missing a step. Chicas, you know how wonderful it is to dance with a man that can lead. In this one dance I felt the soul of salsa and left my heart in Havana, Cuba. My friend Sony teaches private lessons and can arrange for small group lessons with other professional teachers too! He can be contacted by email sony8172002@yahoo.com.mx. Sony is just learning english so it is best to corrspond in spanish. I use freetranslation.com for translating. Thanks Rose for the tickets to the Flamingo night. Thanks for the website. Yours truly, Ms. Robin Pohl Dear Robin, thank you so much for writing in and sharing your experience of dancing in Cuba... hopefully one day, I'll be able to find time to go down and experience the scene there myself. February 20, 2003 -- Salsa Song for Frankie Martinez Video Clip First let me just tell you that I like your site very much I'm going to put a link from my website to yours. I'm the director of Descarga Rumbera Dance Company in Las Vegas and I just wanted to find out if you guys already know the name of the song and the artist of that song you guys have in one of your video clips with Frankie Martinez social dancing at the Puerto Rico Congress. I just felt in love with that song I think it is Oscar de Leon singing but I'm not sure. you very much. We'll see you in May at the L.A. Salsa Congress. -- Tony
Rico February 20, 2003 -- Rincon Hispano Paul! Rincon is not shut, just their Bloor St. location. Their original store at Jane and Sheppard is still open. If that's too far for you (it's quite a day trip for down town guys like me!) then check out Super Latin Music at St. Clair and Dufferin. -- Josh February 20, 2003 -- Hi Rose - could you let Colleen (February 17/03 T.O. Salsa) know that the song she is likely thinking of is "Guantanamera" - the best version of this song (outside of Cuba - it's a million times better when you hear it in that beautiful country) is by Compay Segundo - you can get it off his CD titled "Las Flores De La Vida". Celia Cruz also does a lovely rendition of this song. And I must add that this is the absolute best site for salsa information that I have ever come across. Congratulations Rose. CK February 18, 2003 -- Aventura broke the rules?!?!?!?
Hey Rose, I just came across something funny...This band called "Aventura"
who's logo and album title is "We broke the rules"...believe
that they DID SO...????? I was in NY recording and singing with Huey Dunbar, Tito Nieves and Charlie Cruz. It so happens that I was in an event were radio personalities from "La Mega" (NY all-latin radio station)were in the dressing room conversing something that totally made me walk right over and invite myself into the conversation...They were mentioning that this bachata group Aventura were waltzing around saying that they started this new "level" of bachata on their own with their own ideas. But one of the guys admited to this radio personality that they took an idea from a merengue band called Dominicanada who had a song called "My All" (Mi Todo). The reason this caught my attention was because...I RECORDED, ARRANGED AND SANG THAT SONG!!!!! I went up to this guy and told him to clarify what he just said and I introduced myself as the "guy from Dominicanada". He was a little confused at first...but it came to a point where I had to sing the damn thing in front of everybody in the room. Since that became their stamp of approval, I was showered with compliments and people saying that I was the one who broke the rules!!! Point being, Aventura says they were the original brainstormers around this new bachata sound when I had the idea all along!!!! All I gots to say is "I'm representin' The T-Dot Oh!!!!" -- Ricky Franco February 18, 2003 -- Name of a song!

Also, if ya could give me some trusted websites for buying some excellent salsa CDs online for a reasonable price (sorry, im a university student!), it would be greatly appreciated! Happy CD Hunting, RoseFebruary 12, 2003 -- bachata where can i get the words to the new song of Aventura (la guerra)? Can you please give me a web site where i could get it? Thank you very much... Elizabeth Dear Elizabeth, if the song has just been released, it would be very difficult to find a site that would have these lyrics unless Aventura has their own site and/or unless the record label publishes it on their CD or on their own site. Maybe you'll get lucky, a reader will have the time to listen to the song, and send us the lyrics to post... RoseFebruary 12, 2003 -- UN-romantic songs: La agarro bajando? Not likely Hi Rose, I believe you had mentioned something about this song before, maybe it was on one of last year's lists. Back then you had made the exact same mistake about the meaning of this song. I am surprised Freddie didn't catch it, but then agan maybe he compiled the other list. Alrighty, here goes. The abovementioned song by Gilberto Santa Rosa DOES NOT mean what you said it does. Ii is not about a guy who is there for the girl when she is feeling down. This is the literal translation, yes, but the meaning is different and reflects a play on words. The girl is the object of the man's affection, but she is not giving him the time of day. She flirts with him and plays a "juego de pasion" - a game of love - he says he likes her strategy "me encanta su estrategia", she has a lot of grace and a perfect behaviour - and he concludes that all these actions on her part are making him fall in love with her. Then the refrain goes "Dejala que sigue, yo la agarro bajando" - let her go on because I'll be here to catch her when she comes down off of her "cloud", i.e. her flirty ways. He also says that what goes up must come down. Overall, it is a song of flirtation, good times, and the initial chase between a man and a woman when two people start to like each other. So, in conclusion, THIS IS A HAPPY, HAPPY SONG. And, I went and wrote this whole letter because I love this song and I hate to see it misinterpreted. Also, Gilberto is coming to town and a lot of your readers will go see him, hear the song and be mislead, wondering why the whole band is smiling so happily when they are singing this un-romantic salsa:))) keep up the good work! Boo & Kitty February 11, 2003 -- I love your website! I have been looking all over for the lyrics to these songs, because I dance for a spanish night club and I love to sing while I dance. I look all over for the lyrics to " Te quiero igual qua ayer " , and I was so surprised you have it. Keep up the great work! If you have time can you find the lyrics to " Vuela Vuela " its a bachata song too. Thanx- Dolores Dear Dolores, thanks for writing in -- maybe one of the Readers will have the lyrics to the bachata song you requested... Rose February 10, 2003 -- Anti-Valentine's Day Songs I liked your selections, but I think anything by La India deserves about 1 to 35 on the anti-valentine's day list. judgeing by her music, she must have had her heart ripped out about a million times -- Brian February 9, 2003 -- 2002 Collection of Salsa Music Good Day, and I must admit a very good web site indeed and very informative. Rose January 26, 2003 -- Hello Rose, Can you help me, Do you know the name of the song that includes the phrase "las calaveras todas blancas son". Thanks! Ana - Veracruz, México Dear Ana, possibly one of our Readers can help you... January 22, 2003 -- Song Title
I have not been able to find the name of a song that goes something
like this "te estoy conociendo ahora, te estoy conociendo tanto..."
(Salsa), can you help me? Thanks, Marilupe January 22, 2003 -- Cuba Si! In response to "desperate salsera" .... January 21st Check on this compilation CD (you should be able to find soundclips on amazon.ca or one of the other cd websites) it's title: Rhythm & Smoke: Cuba Sessions. I do remember seeing the commercial a long long time ago and vaguely remember the song, but I have a feeling that it is on this album (which is nice by the way - as it harbors a variety of cuban melodies and rhythms). Lisa :-) January 22, 2003 -- Cuba Si! Hi Rose - this is in response to the request from "A Desperate Salsera" posted to your web site on January 21st ....I believe the song she is looking for is called, "Te Apartes de Mi" by the fabulous Cuban singer Compay Segundo (she may recognize his name from the Buena Vista Social Club album) - that is of course if we are talking about the same commercial. This particular song can be found on one of two albums that I am aware of. The first is album is called, "Las Flores de la Vida" - this album is all Compay Segundo and it was released in 2001. The second album that I am aware of that has this particular song is "Hecho en Cuba" (Made in Cuba) released in 2002 - I know that most HMV stores carry this particular CD, although you can get either of the above mentioned CD's from CD Warehouse or its web site (which I frequently order from with absolutely no complaints - their selection of Latin music is incredible) www.mymusic.ca . My recommendation of course would be to go to this web site and do a search on Compay Segundo - I can guarantee that the album "Las Flores de la Vida" will likely be on there - the cool thing about this web site is that it allows you to screen the various songs before ordering the CD (they have about 30 second bits of each track listed). I would recommend doing this just to make sure that I am right about the "Cuba Si" song. Hope this answers the Desperate Salsera's query. Christina from Ottawa January 21, 2003 -- HEEEEEEEEElllllllPpp -- There is a commercial on tv which features Cuba. A salsa song is played as pictures of children run off to school and a horse rides along the shore of the ocean. I am in desperate need of this song but I do not know the title or artist. At the end of the commercial is says “ Si Cuba “ . If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated....... Thankssssssssss, A Desperate Salsera Dear Desperate Salsera, sorry I've never seen this commercial -- but then again, I don't ever have time to watch TV. Maybe one of our readers will know... January 20, 2003 -- I have a question about Freddy Rios. I would like to know what the name of music and CD, when Freddy and Mike danced at West Congress in LA in 2001. Please tell me if you know. MIKI Dear Miki, maybe one of the readers can help you out. January 19, 2003 --Salsa Music vs Mambo Music What is the essential difference between salsa music and mambo music? I'm a mambo dancer (on 2) from the fifties. Possibly there is a difference in percussion. Or, salsa is a generic term for Latin music which includes mambo. When the music starts, how can I tell the difference - if there is a difference? Bill Dear Bill, due to the lack of time, the short answer would be there really is no significant difference between salsa and mambo music, except maybe the era and the "style" played. Mambo music seems to be characterized more with the older classics from the 50s, 60s and possibly 70s, and has more of a latin jazz feeling to it; before salsa romantica, and subsequent newer artists of today. What I would call Mambo-style music is also associated with dancing on 2, New York or Eddie Torres-style, where they break on the 2 beat. What I would call more readily as Salsa Music is usually preferred for dancing on 1, although technically you can dance on any count to salsa or mambo music. That would be my short answer for now... It's a great question and something I'd like to do more research on in future... I did a quick search and found very little websites that can actually answer this question.
