Dear TOsalsa! -- 2005

March 30, 2005 -- Salsero de Cuna

Dear Rose: I have noticed that none of the feedbacks I have sent you are posted. I don’t know if you select the comments and who those are coming from.

One thing I can assure you is that I grew up in Havana and that I have found some of the postings in your page, by visitors and so called dancers, totally misleading and erroneous. Like the guy from NYC who claims that Salsa was born in New York. I have never come across to such an ignorant statement. I would not have posted his statements, for your site is visited daily by people who know the history of Salsa. That New Yorker, whether Latino or not, knows about the history of Salsa as much as a monkey knows about literature. His statements are ridiculously offensive, not only to the intelligence, but the love we real salseros feel for the Cuban music. Keep in mind that eating rice, beans, and fried plantain along does not make a Latino. The Latinity works from inside the individual.

Also, the lady, who is an instructor, who claims that Rueda is an ancient dance, is also misleading. Rueda de Casino (for its actual name) is the product of the Guaracheros de Regla, leaded by Jorgito Alfaro, one of the top soloists of that Cuban famous Comparsa, at the restaurant club of Patricio Lumumba in Miramar, Havana. Group dance and rueda dance are two different animals altogether. And she makes reference to a wealth of information she had apparently gathered throughout her academic years, to pretend to support her theory. Obviously, she knows about the history of Cuban music as much as the same monkey aforementioned.

Others make claims criticizing us Cubans for defending titleship to Salsa. We invented it, so whose credit is it? We feel pleased that the world is dancing our music, but I have yet to see a non-Cuban dancing with the feelings we do. To begin with, the good Salsa has several musical ingredients and only those who know how to dance to each one of those ingredients, are actually to be said that they are salseando. I’ve been to several places and seen good dancers, but the only places where I have seen real salseros are San José, Los Cazadores, Hotel Plaza, El Turquino, San Francisco de Paula, Virgen del Camino, Pogolotti, etc. And all these places are no where else but in Havana.

I will recommend that that so many people who sit at their PCs to write things they have no clue about, listen to what Roberto Torres, Sonora Matancera’s singer, has to say about the history of the Cuban music. I will also recommend that they view some videos of Los Muñquitos de Matanzas, Juán Bacallao, dancer of Orchestra Aragón, Chano Pozo, Beny Moré, Castellano, Pio Leyva, Pacho Alonso, Celeste Mendoza, or simply just ask a Cuban and watch how we dance. They may learn something. Sincerely, Guarachero

Dear Guarachero, thanks for all your feedback, and presently the Dear TOsalsa and Discussion Forums are updated manually by me when I have some spare time. Hopefully soon, we will have our message board up and everyone can post to their hearts' content on a daily basis.

It would be almost impossible for us to decide who's right or wrong when posting, and even if the information may not be correct; it's definitely an insight on human nature to see how people react in these forums. Sincerely, Rose

Darlene: If your mom is to be 80, the best music you can bring her is "Madre Querida" by Los Cinco Latinos and the leading voice is a woman. Your mom will remember because those were the most romantic singers of the 50s. It goes: "Madre querida ya vez tu cuento no olvidé y toda mi vida a venerarte dediqué. !Qué feliz es aquel que mantiene fiel En su alma por siempre cual luz de Edén! Su cariño sagrado de Madre………" She'll enjoy it. Guarachero

March 28, 2005 -- IS IT SALSA, OR JUST SON?

We have become accustomed to call it Salsa, but in reality it is nothing else but Son. There are various claims as to whether the name was originated after DJ Escalona’s expression of SALSA! during his presentations on the radio in the 50s, or it was Ignacio Piñeiro’s famous Échale salsita, composed after the Africano who sold sandwiches at the side of the Carretera Central (Central Road) of Cuba. March 21, 2005 -- Shall We Dance, japanese version

I am taking a class in western literature. I had to watch this movie, Shall we Dance, japanese version. I am trying to find some research papers that deals with mens feelings on dancing, that is japanese men. The film says that the old traditional men or way of life ,that men and women , even if married just did not dance. That this was concidered inappropiate behavior. That japanese men hide their true feelings. That deep inside they do want to learn this but are afraid. Is this the case? I guess you might say is this true of the Japanese men that have not addopted the western way of thinking. Any feedback on this movie or how japanese men are concerning their feelings of openess when it comes to expressing thier true feelings. Thanks. -- Peanut Girl

March 21, 2005 -- Ray Baretto - Swing la Moderna

I saw an entry on the tosalsa.com web site, (by dj Billy Bryans) and it mentioned the Ray Baretto track "Swing la Moderna". I have heard at least two versions of this tune. Do you know how many covers of it there are, and what albums they are on, and who are the artists (...if covered by anyone else other than Ray Baretto...).

I love this tune, but am having great difficulty in locating a recording. Any info that might locate an album would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Rob

Dear Rob, did you do a search on the music websites, such as descarga.com? Rose

March 19, 2005 -- Is there an age limit to salsa dancing?

There's been a question that's been lurking in my head eversince I fell in love with salsa dancing. How old is too old? I am 58, took a lesson at age 55 and out of sheer love and passion for the dance managed to do very well in the 3yrs period. I have a dance partner I go out with (he used to teach) and we usually go out to clubs on weekends.

My concern is this- because of the generally young crowd in the club, I am getting so self conscious thinking "what am I doing here? Am I not a little bit too old for this kind of thing?" I work out in a gym regularly and is occasionally on call to teach aerobics and I must say I give this credit when people refuse to believe my age. 58 is, however, 58, and even my high energy level does not not seem to help and I find myself questioning...is this right? shouldn't I be doing ballroom dancing instead?- but I hate ballroom dancing and do passionately love salsa's ryhtmn and the music. It makes me feel alive!

I am writting in your column hoping that somebody out there feel the same way I do. My co-worker thinks "this age thing" should'nt stop me from doing the thing I love to do besides, not only don't I look my age I can apparently move too! Love your column. By the way, anybody who's going to Tokyo, Japan and looking for a salsa club, do check out "Salsa Caribe". It is an awesome place. -- Miranda

Dear Miranda, if you were to travel to other cities, such as Chicago or NYC where the latin population is larger and salsa dancing has been there forever-- there is no age limit and some of the salsa performers are in their 60's and 70's now!

And if you don't look 58, have a high energy level, and dancers will still dance with you -- what does "this age thing" matter? That's the great thinkg about dancing -- it's ageless, but Toronto is still a fairly young salsa scene in the clubs and if you really feel uncomfortable, just go to the clubs that have an older crowd, such as El Rancho.

When I chat with my salsa friends who love to dance, we always joke that we'll still be dancing when we're in our 80's! So go for it... after almost anything goes in this day and age... Rose

March 4, 2005 -- Mechy's negativity about non-Cuban salsa dancers

I am a Mexican living in the U.S.A for about 20 years. I began dancing Salsa about 5 years ago in the state of Oregon, which is where I reside. I just fell in love with the music and how it makes you feel when you hear it!

Since I was not born in Cuba or in Puerto Rico, I had to learn how to dance Salsa, and the only way I could do so was by counting off--you know, the typical 1-8 count. As a Mexican, living in the U.S.A, it gives me great pleasure to see people who are not Mexican dancing Cumbia or any other kind of Mexican Dancing.

I don't criticize them. I appreciate their effort, and their willingness to embrace other cultures. It seems to me that we ought to be looking for the positive in life not the negative. It seems that Merchy is a very angry individual--and I am sorry for him. It seems to me that we should always follow the Golden Rule of Behavior: IF PEOPLE HAVE NOTHING NICE TO SAY ABOUT OTHERS, THEN THEY SHOULD JUST SHUT THEIR MOUNTHS AND DO NOT SAY ANYTHING. This does not seem to be Merchy's philosophy--which speaks loudly about his character as a human being--I am sorry.

On the other hand, I know that not all Cubans feel the same way about people who salsa-dance!--This gives me great pleasure! I have several Cuban friends who appreciate the effort of people who are learning to Salsa. They look for the positive in people--not the negative. Unlike our "companero" Merchy. I would be very curious to hear how Merchy feels about Gael Garcia-Bernal's role as Che Guevara in the movie "Los diarios de motocicleta"--who happens to be neither, Argentinian, nor Cuban, but Mexican, like me!! -- Antonio

March 4, 2005 -- In response to Ciao re Cuban Dancing

This is in reply to Ciao.

The best answer I can think of is that you may want to learn Cuban dances through the use of your natural senses.

And to illustrate this I can offer the following facts:

I am originally from Cuba. Born in Matanzas, the home of the Muñequitos, and raised in San Miguel and Pogolotti in Havana. Danced with Comparsas in Havana, and choreographed several 15th Birthdays throughout Havana. I was first exposed to dance, about 7 years of age, at the corner of my street town competing with other kids to gain nickel competition with the music from the turntable. Drunkards paid 5 cents to the best dancer. I won many times The Cuban music is to be absorbed through the skin. That is, you must allow it to enter you body and let it guide your moves. Cuban music is like any language, you learn the culture and context behind it, and then you let it bleed though your skin.

I can recommend you to listen strictly to Cuban music. It is very rich with many rhythms, such as Cha Cha Chá, Guaguancó, Rumba, Columbia, Son, Guaracha, Palo Mayombe, Likumí, Arará, Abakuá, Conga, etc. That’s why people wanted to call it salsa. Once you learn how to identify each type of dance, you’ll be able to shock Latin Girls.

It is not hard. Just listen to Cuban music. And whenever you see a Cuban man dancing, look at his feet and observe that when there is a good salsa playing, he will dedicate his steps to each one of the type of dances I just mentioned. Salsa is not what many people think (style, acrobatics, 1-2-3-4 steps, nor any of that non-sense), Cuban dance is about feelings. It works from inside out.

Take it from me. At age of 54, I can go to any salsa party and I will dance all night. Follow my recommendations and you’ll see how those girls come to you to ask you for a dance. Don’t let anyone fool you. Salsa is about desire, feelings, and ear. Technique has nothing to do with it. -- Gilberto

March 2, 2005 -- Dancing Last Night

Hi Rose, Just wanted to let you know that I went to Babalu for the first time last night and had an absolutely wonderfull night!. I hadn't danced for 9 months due to some injuries and I took the class from Giovanni Torres which was great with lots of tips and hints.

The guy I paired up with was fabulous, very nice, great dancer, very patient. He gave me tips and hints and complimented me (even though I did not deserve it). He treated me with the upmost respect, just the type of partner any woman would love to have dance with her. Anyways stayed for a bit after to watch the dancing and saw him with a great gal and they were both very, very advanced. So thought you would like to hear a positive, encouraging story. Can't wait to go back!!! Janice

Where can I go around the Toronto area, including Mississaug, if I am only new to Latin dancing...which club would be good for rookies..and when?? and how should I dress?? Thanks

Dear Mark, please go to our Clubs Section to see what's available in Toronto and check out our Beginner's Guide to Salsa, which should help answer all your questions... In terms of what to wear... if you go to regular dance clubs (non-salsa) , it wouldn't be any different, except don't wear rubber-soled shoes... Rose

February 28, 2005 -- Grand Rapids, Michigan Clubs?

Hi, I have a meeting to attend in Michigan, wondering if you knew of any salsa clubs to go to there for MON/Tuesdays. If you have any reviews, even better. Your prompt response is kindly appreciated! -- Cindy

Dear Cindy, sorry, I have no clue where you could get that information, except do a search in Google.com or try salsacity links in Salsaweb or Salsapower-- Rose

February 25, 2005 -- Just wanted to say....

that you have such a great site!

The articles / advice / information on this website is molding me as I start & progress in my dancing. Even though I only want to dance socially, I do want to become one of the "better" dancers seen at the clubs. It would give me such a rush just to impress the partner that decided to dance with me... above all those watching the floor. It would also give me a sense of self-mastery that not many things in my life can.

A little bit about me... I'm a 24yr old asian male that lives in Phila, PA. We have a few latin night clubs in the area. I always enjoyed dancing in general and wanted to take a formal class (salsa, ballroom, hip hop, etc) but never got around to it until recently (4mths). My group salsa classes are pretty general and I had no previous experience, but I immediately was drawn to it and couldn't get enough of it.

Searching the net I found this great site and it contained all the answers to the beginner questions I have. Most of them were all contained in your beginner's guide. I REALLY appreciate what you do for those who are just starting out. The information is priceless and I will recommend this site to other people often. Thank You so much -Mike

February 22, 2005 -- Salsa Song

In reply to the following: February 19, 2004 -- Help! Hi Guys, i went to Havana, Cuba last June and heard a song that went 'que sera, que sera, que sera, cuando yo mi vaya' quite fast. We asked around and the locals said it was by 'El Medico De La Salsa' but im having trouble finding it. Can you help? thanks very much, Max

I believe Max could be talking about the Cuban song "La Bola" (Album: Manolín: Para mi gente" by Manuel González, aka "El médico de la Salsa". I suggest he check out: www.timba.com/artists/awards. "La Bola" was voted the #2 "Best Timba Dance Song of All Time".

February 22, 2005 -- Salsa Song

February 12, 2004 -- what's the name of this song by celia cruz?hi, maybe you guys can help me. i'm trying to find the name of a song that Celia Cruz sings, the only words i can remember is the chorus: "baila con la punta en pie, baila con la punta en pie" it's very upbeat and fun song. thank you. -- Leo

Leo, the songj is called just that, “Baila con la punta del pie”. It’s a Cuban song. It was voted the #9 “Best Timba Dance Song of All Time” (I suppose Timba as in “Timbales”) by www.timba.com/artists/awards. Aura

February 22, 2005 -- Salsa Song

This is for: November 5, 2003 -- Salsa Song Hi, There's a really great salsa song that I', trying to find the name for. In English it's "Do it to me again" (in spanish it would be something like "has me lo traves"). Do you know what this song is and/or who it's by? -- Jonathan

February 22, 2005 -- The song about latinos putting their hands in the air...

Regarding the request by: September 30, 2003 -- Do you know this song I was in Costa Rica this summer and there was a song on at the disco that everybody loved. It said something about all the latinos putting their hands in the air and then later it listed all the spanish speaking countries. Do you know what I'm talking about? -- Amy

I believe Amy is talking about a very upbeat song made famous during the mid-70s or early 80s by Venezuelan singer José Luis Rodríguez, aka "El Puma", "Agarrense de las manos". It's a classic -- Aura

February 18, 2005 -- Waterloo Salsa - Thursday night - The Flying Dog

Hello there, This is a quick note to say that a few of us from TO went to Waterloo last night for thursday night salsa at the Flying Dog. Not having been to or even heard about that venue, one did not know what to expect. I was pleantly surprised to find a large no huge, nicely lit club with leather couches, two separate bars and friendly staff. They played more merengue than i'd have liked but the crowd seemed to be pleased. I enjoyed dancing there and recommend The Flying Dog to anyone from TO looking for a change of venue on Thursday night. Thank you Waterloo and see you soon! shalin

I have a question for Any ToSalsa Reader that would like to answer...I would like to know who sings a song called Hay Hombre! it is a Bachata... and what album does this song appear on .... Thank you Red!

February 10, 2005 -- Keep up the Good Work

Dear Rose, I would like to thank you for you amazing website.

I’m in Melbourne Australia here the Latin Salsa scene isn’t as big as in Toronto Canada I wish it was thou.... we do have perhaps three Latin clubs nothing special thou...

I also wanted to thank u for enhancing my salsa knowledge since I came across ur site I’d learned so much about my own culture and more about Salsa music my favorite bit is the top ten salsa songs and to see how many have people sent their favorites songs including me hehehe... thank u for publishing them....

I have now sort of change my taste of salsa and also appreciated even more due to large amount information available on your website and reading other people’s taste, I see this website like a tool to promote Salsa globally and see salsa will grow bigger than what it already is and I couldn’t agreed with you more in saying that Salsa will never die and we shouldn’t let it die in fact we should make it bigger and pass it on to generations......

If you ever decide to come down under well u should, it would be great to see what u think of Australia latin scene that’s if u haven’t been already I believe it would be great to see u here and experience the Latin scene here... and help us make it grow, as I think u site is global and is an icon for the salsa community... Luis

Dear Luis... thank you! It's always great to hear from other readers -- especially half-way around the World! It's also nice to see that a Chinese-Canadian who loves latin music and dance can help someone of latin-descent learn more about their own culture -- that should generate some sparks from a few Readers?!? Rose

February 12, 2005 -- Dear Toronto Salsa

Dear Toronto Salsa, This website is a great source for information regarding salsa events and music, was here were I found out that azucar negra, grupo gale, Oscar de Leon etc., were coming to Toronto.

But when I was surfing through the pictures on the website I saw things that really disturbed me:

1. There is a minor hanging out and drinking on the salsa night clubs in Toronto, I think that this is not correct and people should really check the IDS, or they going to get in trouble. I believe that his name is Teddy, please someone take him back with his parents until he reaches puberty.

2. There is a salsa ghost who always appears in all the pictures, even at different salsa congress on the same date, in old pictures of the Palladium, and even pepple have pictures of him during Ibrahim Ferrer’s first concert in Cuba. Is really freaky, sometimes when I am dancing on the clubs I can feel that he is standing behind me with his curly blond hair, all dressed in black, arms folded. Sometimes I am even afraid to open my closet because I think that he is going to be there. Papacito

Dear Papacito... glad you love teh site... but you are kidding right (about what distubs you...) maybe from too much drinking and dancing? Rose

February 10, 2005 -- Restaurants

Hi Rose and Ziv, My friend is visiting me from Alberta and she absolutely LOVES salsa. I don’t know much about the culture, so I don’t know where I can take her in Toronto to eat. She came in last night and started talking about how she wished she could eat authentic food – can you recommend a few places to me? What are your favourite traditional restaurants? Monica

Dear Monica, I don't recall the names of all the latin restaurants located on St. Clair between Bathurst and Dufferin which are pretty good, but you could always take her to Babaluu's, El Rancho or Plaza Flamingo which have latin food. Rose

February 8, 2005 -- Video on your website

Good evening.
I was looking at the video clip of Frankie Martinez dancing and I was wondering if you ever found the name of that song that is playing? If so, would you mind sharing the name? Thanks. Josh Rojas

Dear Josh, this would have to be one of the most-asked music questions on this site! It's amazing to see how you can get hooked on a song just from watching a videoclip... It's Me Prendeste Velas by Oscar D'Leon. Rose

February 2, 2005 -- Help to find a song?

Hi! I don't know if this is the proper type of question to ask in this 'contact us' form, but i'll try my luck :P I am looking for a song. The title is either 'chizero" or "No tengo poder Chizero" I heard that that Johnny Vasquez used it in a workshop at the UK Congress in 2003 and Tropical Gem used in one of their instructional videos. Unfortunately there are were no credits to the songs they used in the video. I would appreciate if you could let me know if you know who is the singer of this song or may be help me get the song title right? thank you very much JShadow
January 29, 2005 -- Salsa Song for Wedding

Salsa song for wedding Message: I came across your website, and it's great! Wondering if you could help me out. I'm looking for a spanish salsa song to dance to during the father/daughter dance in my wedding. We think it would be more fun to show our heritage through this way, than a simple slow song. Any ideas?? -- Marissa

Dear Marissa, take your pick of any of the songs that are in the Top 10 Salsa Song Lists... Rose

January 27, 2005 -- dream salsa couple

My dream salsa couple, the ultimate salsa superstars in Toronto. They don't dance together, but blow up the world of salsa here. They would be Juan Carlos Blunes and ,Adelia, the young Cuban girl who taught at Two To Tango. This couple together would put any dancers at any Salsa Congress to shame.
January 27, 2005 -- Watch Out!

Two things you should watch out for on the dance floor. These can be dangerous moves, because you suddenly move into a space that you weren't dancing in before, therefore, other people dancing around you can't guess where you are going to be and, and leaders never look to see where they are heading. This move, where the guy and girl spin together holding on to each other and then suddenly they step back dramatically. The problem is you are stepping really back, much further backwrds than you are dancing before. And you are not watching where you are stepping, because you are heading backwards. But please don't step on my foot. When the girl puts her legs between the guy's legs. Do you know you there are people dancing behind his legs? Don't trip other people doing this move. -- Manuel
January 27, 2005 -- Awsome site

January 27, 2005 --

Dear TOsalsa! I am a dancer and I was recently interviewed to be a salsa instructor at a studio. The place was very nice but they had a stipulation that I'm not familiar with.

Because I am not a specialist in Salsa, they said they would train me in Salsa. Training would take two intense weeks and then I would be contracted to teach for them for one year minimum! They said the training was worth $5000, and I couldn't leave. They wouldn't tell me the wage, they said it would be less if students weren't in. Is this normal?

Thanks for any advice you can give me! I love your site. Danielle

Dear Danielle, the short answer is -- I hope you haven't signed up with them as it sounds like highway robbery to me... Shop around with various salsa dance schools before signing up; and learn how to dance first before making the commitment to learn to become a teacher. And if you become a student first and take dance classes, you're first set of lessons maybe only cost you $75 to $150 for a minumum of 6-8 weeks! Please read our Beginner's Guide to Salsa... Rose

January 26, 2005 --

what unites africans all over the world. our sense of rhythm unites us on the dance floor- play beats of african origin and we all dance, cubans nigerians , african americans alike etc most africans world wide may refuse a bowl of pasta salad but will say yes to a plate of yam, fried bananas, peas or should I just say "soul food" even though our cultures vary slightly, people of african heritage all over the world share a sense of unity through music, dance, food, poetry and many other ways. That is what makes us african -- Alice
January 25, 2005 --Long Lost Instructor

Hi Rose. About 4 years ago I had taken salsa lessons from a gentleman by the name of Juan Barrera. At the time, he was teaching out of "The Workout" at Yonge & Sheppard. Due to my lack of motivation, I quit after the beginner level. Now that I've been around the salsa scene, and developed more of a passion for Latin music, I've realized that this instructer was definately one of the best dancers I've ever encountered. I've been trying to locate this instructer with no success. If you Rose, or anyone else knows where, or if, this person is still teaching, please respond. Thanks. Adrian

Dear Adrian, sorry I've never heard of him. Rose

January 25, 2005 -- Hi from Beijing China

Dear Tosalsa, It's glad to know you here. I'm a crazy salsaholic from Beijing China. Salsa is getting more and more popular in Beijing and Shanghai nowadays. It's very nice to see people from all over the world to develop salsa market here. I'm going to Toronto in the beginning of Feb.2005 and I'd love to see salsa heat in Toronto. Would you please advice me where to go in Toronto for Cuban salsa? Thanks very much in advance and best regards, Jenny Zhao

January 21, 2005 -- North America

Will somebody PLEASE check a map. North America is freakin' huge! When you say "in north America they dance like this" or "in north America they teach like that", you're suggesting they do the same in new york, Alabama, and Quebec. This is not true. is it? no.

Hey, there's always some genius that points out that Argentina is part of Latin America, and that they dont dig on salsa down there. Just trying to help. Well, as long as I'm here I'd like to say that you dont have to be Chinese to be good at kung-fu. Look at me. I'm latin and yet I can walk up the side of the wall like one of the 5 deadly venoms. (toad venom, I believe). Same with the holy dance (¡salsa!). Either you got it, or you don't.

Now, I know some latins who have no "it" whatsoever (it-less, if you will) and I know some non-latins who have so much "it" they can e-mail some to their friends back home. And while being latin certainly increases your chances of having some "it", without love (well, for the music for starters) you might as well just dance L.A. style. Ha! just kidding! you know us New York cats can't help it! -e

January 20, 2005 -- looking for beginners lessons - in Toronto

January 19, 2005 -- Mana and Cuban Show

It was great to see some many Toronto Salseros coming to the Rumba show the Thursday before Christmas at Mana. But this needs to be said. Toronto Salseros have always been more open to Rumba, or other traditional Latin dances if they consider them distinct from salsa.

It would be hard to imagine so many people would come to a Cuban style salsa or casino dance show. In Cuban dancing and Cuban salsa songs, rumba especially the dance Columbia forms a major component. So, you can't separate Cuban rumba and Salsa dancing as some salseros will have you believe.

I agree with the other people that have written in. Cuban or other more Latin American salsa dance styles are generally looked down upon in Toronto. Or they have to considered as add-ons to the existing salsa dance styles. So, they have compartalize them as Casino Rueda or Afro-Cuban movement.

If these salsa dance schools were serious about Cuban salsa dancing, they would teach them as separate courses (maybe a Cuban style salsa beginner course, like they do with New York on 2) or teach actual Casino dancing in the Casino Rueda classes. Cuban style dancing or Casino is different in their basic step, spins than other styles of salsa. As Chincub and Paul Chivers says, Casino is a form of dance. If you go to Cuba and you asks someone to dance Casino, don't expect there to be more than one couple. -- Manuel

January 17, 2005 -- Salsa Lessons versus Clubbing

Hi Rose, I hope you don' t mind me just emailing you out of the blue, but I was just wondering what you thought about taking Salsa lessons as opposed to just going clubbing. I am very interested in learning but am not sure what the best method is.

I live in Vancouver and was contemplating going to the Salsa Vancouver
school with Susanna Domingues. It just seems a little long (6 weeks). Tx for your help! -- Robbie

January 15, 2005 -- Lula Lounge

Hello, I've been reading about Lula Lounge since I started looking for a Cuban club. I moved to Toronto from Quebec just this year. I'm only 18 and I was wondering if I would be able to get in. It doesn't say anything about ages on the website. I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me. Maja

Dear Maja, if I recall, you need to be 19 to get into the clubs. Rose

January 14, 2005 -- Dance etiquette, around the world. How do you rate?

Hello Rose; I read some discussions regarding difficulties many non-Latin men and women have while trying to enjoy dancing in popular Latin clubs in Canada.

Let us compare notes… From what I have experienced, it is even more of an issue in the US. If the majority of the Latin male and female dancers ignore non-Latin women and men when they are approached to dance in the clubs, how on Earth is the Latin dance scene going to progress and be accepted by the masses?

I mentioned America, because I have experienced a noticeable difference in the attitudes of the European dancers, as compared to the dancers in the U.S.A. A white male in his forties, who is well groomed, can be given the up and down by a female from the states in two seconds, and then asked… You dance???

Most of the pre-qualifying and discomfort that I experience with American women will not happen when I approach European dancers. There is a noticeably different attitude, and I do not feel as though the whole process of asking someone to dance is handicapped by ignorance.

In addition, I have experienced more negative returns from Latin women than any other ethnic group. If there is a poor representation by the very people who have the closest association to the music and the dance, more non-Latin people will choose to ignore the so-called Latin dance scene.

If the dancers choose to snob others in an openly social gathering, the recipients of this ignorance will seek more friendly venues and user-friendly activities. I know there are exceptions, and I have been fortunate to meet many wonderful people within the Latin Dance circle, but it is not the norm.

I feel that this scenario is one of the very reasons why so many people seek out Ballroom dancing and other dance clubs. The majority of the people are willing to dance with a stranger, will show each other respect, will be friendly, and will be open to dancing with you regardless of your level.

I know this is a very controversial subject, but I just want to remind people that social dancing has to be social to work, regardless of your ethnic background. I love the music and the dance, but I do not like, or do I tolerate the ignorance associated the practice of social and cultural bias.

By playing the role of dance ambassador, all of us will promote and unify the very activity that brings individuals from all cultures together, to share a common passion, and promote a multi-cultural experience for generations to follow.

One last note… most of the dancers I have met from Canada were very nice, and wonderful dancers. Ciao. Jackson FL, USA

January 13, 2005 -- African salsa song Syver is looking for

Hey Rose... I am responding to the person that wrote in about the African Salsa song. First of all. I find it rude when Dj's dont tell their guests the name and the artist of the song that is playing. When I am playing I am more than happy to tell you what is the name of the song and the artist and where you can find it. By the way It's not Africando. Based on your description, I believe it is a song from Pape Fall and the song title is "African Salsa" -- DJ Julio Cezar
January 13, 2005 -- Thursday Night Salsa

January 11, 2005 - Dear TOsalsa

Noooooo!!! Please Chino don’t go, who is going to write all these non-sense, nationalist arguments against the US… I know that we have Alex, Vanessa and Mechy, but you are the man!

Who is going to tell us about that night at Babalus, about the beautiful Cuban dancers, about the correct way to dance salsa, or who is going to tell us about the origins of Mambo? Nobody You see, Alex is ok but he doesn’t have the same imagination as you do (or he doesn’t smoke the same crack.)

Actually my point was that you guys bring the same arguments for whatever is the topic is, for example if the topic is smoking on the clubs the discussion should be focus on second hand smoke, municipal laws etc.

Or if the topic is improper salsa instruction you guys should at least name a salsa teacher, that way they could respond and explain the way they teach, but when you mention teachers we do not know what teachers, when you mention dancers we do not know what dancers, etc and when you mentioned that a Cuban invented the Mambo you did not said if it was Prado, Orestes or Rodriguez.

All the discussions come down to the same: no Cuban =not good, learned in North America=not authentic, Canadians=don’t know the real deal. Ball-room=forbidden. It is entertaining but predictable.

Who cares if salsa came from wherever, or cultural claims on products, tell a Brazilian that Soccer came from England, and therefore he is ought to know about the English soccer and that he sucks because he is not English or because he learned to play in Brazil, or tell a Canadian that hockey was invented in the USA, or tell Michael Jordan that basket ball is Canadian or tell the Beatles that Rock & Roll is American, or tell a Cuban that baseball came from the USA. They will all slap you in the forehead.

By the way, I have been to Cuba, I have seen Cuban salsa dancing, I had a Cuban girlfriend named Iris, ok, ok that is too much information.

P.S You didn’t like the movie hero? Papacito

Hi - this message is dual purpose - Syver, I think the DJ got it right and the band you are looking for is Africando -but you might want to try their album Baloba! They are from Senegal and their songs are primarily in Senegalese or French (they are the ones that sing that wonderful tune Aicha - and this CD has both French and Senegalese versions)....good luck with finding that song.

Salsa in London Ontario does exist outside of Wednesday night at Old Chicago's - Friday nights Orlando Valencia and his band Pachanga play this beautiful bar called Old City Hall at the corner of Wellington and Dundas - cover is free before 11:00 PM, dress code in effect (no baseball hats guys....) and it is a great time - really progressive for the salsa scene in London since Old City Hall is a nice atmosphere. Dance floor is a little small, but nice nonetheless.

There is also salsa on Saturday nights at Cafe Paradise - this is off the beaten path on Adelaide Street South at Nelson street - this is not a class establishment by any means, but the DJ will play all requests and is usually really good about mixing it up. No live band at all. Also, careful on what shoes you wear as the floor is tile and slippery - I usually wear my dance sneakers and it is fine, but if you have ballroom shoes leave them at home as you will most definitely slip and slide on the ceramic tiles. January 10, 2005 -- Question for Juan Carlos

This is for Juan Carlos from Santiago de Cuba. I do not know if you are the same Juan Carlos from Red Violin. But it doesn't matter. I have some questions for you.

How do you dance timba? How is timba different from salsa? I find it hard to find the clave in timba. Timba seems to be faster AND slower at the same time. Isn't it weird? Oh, yeah, there is a part in a timba song, where the couples let go of each other, and dance free style. It usually means shaking your body solo. How do you do that? -- Vanessa

January 11, 2005 - Looking for a Dance Partner

hi my name is java, and i woundering if u could help me find a partner to perform, because i have been looking for a long time. pls get back to me

Dear Java, why not join our Partner Search, but if you're not from Toronto, you may want to do a google search see if there's a dance partner search website in your own hometown... or start asking your own friends in the clubs or ask a teacher to see if they know anyone who might be interested from one of their classes. January 10, 2005 -- Spanish Lesson

Do you know of anyone who gives private Spanish speaking classes in the Guelph or Georgetown area? Or do you only focus on dancing?

I can speak Spanish but have trouble with the grammar and verb usage – I learned Spanish by hearing it, not through a class. I find it difficult to find the right class for my, so I’m trying the private teacher route.

Thank you – any direction you can give me would be most appreciated -- Sonia

Dear Sonia, why not check the yellow pages, schools and newspapers... Rose

January 9, 2005 -- Need serious help finding this ?African? song

Hi there, This is my first time writing to your website. I think you have an excellent online resource for information on salsa music and dancing. I'm an aficionado, trying for the longest time to track down the artist and title of this song (or remix) that I first heard more than a year ago in Santa Cruz, California at an ourdoor dance party. It's a fantastic song, because of the beat and the sound, but it's especially difficult to figure out.

Any ideas? In the song, I believe in the lyrics the band chants in a low voice "African...(pause)...Salsa" during the chorus. The rest of the song is in some language I've never heard, but it makes you want to dance salsa, and it has a UNIQUE and modern sound. The DJ would not tell me the name of the song, he said, "I think it's Africando" but he did not elaborate. I listened to a few Africando tracks and I'm starting to think it's not these guys. I have checked Amazon.com and CDuniverse.com and listened to mp3 clips. I even bought "Africando All Stars Mandali" on a hunch. No luck. If any of your members know the answer, I'd greatly appreciate any help. (You can post this message on your website, if you like.) Thanks. Respectfully, Syver California USA

January 8, 2005 -- Spanish Lyrics

I will join to salsa competition and it will be my song.
Please send me the lyrics of La Malanga (Eddie Palmieri) -- Saliha

January 7, 2005 - Frankie Martinez - Social Dancing

Hi Rose, I absolutely LOVE your website!!! I am sooo addicted! Thank you for sharing all this great stuff. I had a question about this particular clip. I know most of the music you have on the site except for the on with Frankie Ruiz- Social dancing. I was wondering if someone gave you the artist name and title?? If so, would you mind sharing?? It's a great song! thanks! karla

Dear Karla, it's always great to hear other dancers who have the same salsa enthusiasm or shall I say addiction... And it never ceases to amaze me how many people after watching this clip, just have to know what the tune is... and maybe that's why I still haven't changed that posting... To quickly put you out of your misery, it's Prendiste de Velas by Oscar D'Leon. Rose
January 5, 2005 -- Comments

This will probably get some comments that Rose has to block out like when people get angry when they hear the Cuban dancing is the best. But I do not want to enter this argument.

I just wanted to comment on the salsa calendar of Toronto salseras in provocative poses. These women are great people and wonderful dancers. But when I am think of the possibility of seeing their half naked bodies in my bedroom, I shudder. Models they ain't.

On one of the other Toronto salsa websites, they have a photo of a cute young couple who dance ballroom. I think they must be 10-12 years or something. I say them dance at Acrobat once (I do not know how they got in), I must say they dance very well. But I was extremely disturbed at the sexually provocative way the girl was dancing, and the clothes she was wearing. Why doesn't ballroom dancing let kids be kids instead of forcing sexuality upon them? It was like watching the girl Jonbonet Ramset who was like 10 years old in her beauty pageants. -- Daniel

January 5, 2005 - My Last Message

Papacito, You say that I would probably say cigars are from Cuba and the best and authentic ones are Cuban, because I may the same argument for Cuban salsa dancing. You made some jokes that I would probably blame SARS on LA or Ballroom dancing (which by the way wasn't as funny as you think).

For those who didn't read my last e-mail, I just said Casino is form of dance, and naturally casino rueda should be danced dancing casino. That is all I said. But your analogy is really good, because it is showing that you are looking at it all wrong.

Cigars are products. Maybe the problem is that you look at salsa dancing as a product. I see salsa dancing as something cultural, something that has tradition and a history, not something bought and sold on the world market. But many people see salsa dancing as just a fast food product, just getting their quick fix, meeting girls, and having instant moment of excitement.

But this has something to do with the gobalization and watering down of world culture, which probably you are not interested in. After all, someone will say, "Just dance!" or "It is just salsa." There is nothing wrong with this attitude. People are ENTITLED NOT to think about the history and culture, and just have fun.

I love when people don't care about the correct way to dance and feel the music, and just do what comes naturally to them, and have good time. But people in Canada do not do that. They have to take lessons, they must have a partner, must spin a lot, etc. They do not question their instructors or what they are taught, because the instructors become their friends, and everybody who goes to salsa congresses dance and think the same way (most often children have the same political views as their parents, more out of familial bond rather than reasoned analysis.)

It is the classic case, of "they" against "us". Cuban salsa dancing is not popular in North America, therefore, it must not be good, or those people are fanatics. It is like when I told a guy that there is great Chinese movie that he has to see. He asked me if I liked Martial Arts. I told him it wasn't a martial arts movie, and the title was Unknown Pleasures. He said he never heard of it, so it musnt't be good and recommended the Chinese movies Hero and House of the Flying Daggers. I am no socialist, and I am what you might consider conservative, but what a unflinching belief in the perfectionism in capitalism to bring the best in culture to popularity.

Another point: people do make cultural claims on products. Most people think pizza comes from Italy. Have you asked an Italian what he thinks of the pizza in Toronto? He probably tell you that authentic pizza comes from Italy. Good old Napoli. And he will probably tell you the pizza in Canada is not really Italian. Or have you ever asked a Chinese person what they think about most of the food that passes for Chinese food in Toronto. They will tell you it is not authentic. They will tell you Chinese fortune cookies do not come from China, and that they are an American invention. Are they being unreasonable or they lunatics?

I haven't been going through the salsa debates as much as before, so I haven't seen the experts "tearing up" (as Rose puts it) the argument that salsa is from Cuba. Most of the people who are criticize me are criticizing my person or what they preceive as my person, rather than my arguments.

For example, papacito, you never said anything about me saying that Cuban cross bodies are for Casino Rueda. You just perceive I am wrong, because you think I do not respect everyone or everything, probably because you sense I am being unfair, because I am not politically correct. I find this particularly alarming from people who have never gone to Cuba, never seen Cuban salsa dancing or the people who say they are salseros who have never studied with a legitimate Cuban salsa teacher. If Rose had gone to Cuba and studied with a respected Cuban salsa teacher (forget the Cuban touristy, cabaret teachers), maybe I could respect what she says about Cuban dancing or the origins of salsa music or dance.

Just a few years ago, Rose or people around her were saying Cuban dancing was the "cumbia" step and had no cross body leads. But all the people around her, the great salsa teachers she has met, her salsa friends have influenced and probably would not make her an impartial observer.

Here are my last points (I really mean it), which will make you a lot of you happy out there. These are things which I find refutable and I want people to address.

1) Most Latin American people who grew up in Latin America, think salsa music and dance come from Latin America. Even Puerto Ricans think salsa comes from Puerto Rico. And most Latin American people prefer Latin American style dancing to North American salsa styles. And the fact that people keep writing saying salsa is from Cuba or Latin dance styles have something special attests to this fact.

2) Mambo by all accounts is Cuban music. Somebody said it came from Haiti with two sisters. Okay, whatever. But the mambo that went to New York was from Cuba. -- Chincub

January 4, 2005 -- Cuban Dancing at Mana

It is nice to see Cuban style salsa dancing being covered by Toronto salsa. It is good to see Cuban dancers in Toronto being finally being recognized. Especially, Juan Carlos Bulnes who I consider the best salsa dancer in Toronto. Thanks to Bong and Billy Bryans for bringing a little variety into the salsa scene in Toronto. It sure needs it.

It is too bad that some people who have never seen salsa dancing are too easily impressed by dips and and hard spins. But real professional dancers who have been around a lot (even if they dance different styles) appreciate what dancers like Juan Carlos can do.

Juan Carlos breaks down the stereotypes people have about Cuban salsa dancing like that is : not elegant, there are no spins, there are no cross body leads, the men don't move too much, there are only arm breaking turns, women are not allowed to show off.

For me, his dancing is great, because it really responds and relfects the music (which is more than just dipping to a pause in the music). He really knows the music. Of course, he was taught by the legendary Santos in Cuba. Just look at his feet and his body, that is where dancing should come form. He likes to improvise and make up steps, and even when he makes mistakes, they don't look like mistakes, they look like he meant to do it, because he covers it up because he knows the music so well. I wouuld like to ask the people (including Rose) who were at Mana last Thursday to say something about the show and Juan Carlos' dancing. I can't think of a better representative of Cuban dancing than Juan Carlos.

January 3, 2005 -- Lyrics

dear tosalsa, i would like for you to give me the lyrics to the song "amor imposible" by Hansel y Raul. you probably know it, i've been trying to get them everywhere and i can't. if they have a certain website i can hear their music, and you know about it, then let me know about that too.

January 3, 2005 -- Posh Lounge

I just got an email from unitedsalseros.com stating that Posh Lounge is now closed until further notice. So I'm guessing that Salsa Wednesdays won't be happening anytime soon. Have you heard anything similar? Will you update the club reviews to point out that people shouldn't go? Joel

Dear Joel, it's impossible to keep up with clubs opening and closing unless someone emails me they are closing. Unfortunately, most promoters only tell me when they open a club for obvious reasons and most are too lazy to advise when they close unless I hear from dancers such as yourself. That's why I always state "please phone the club first if you're not sure..." Rose

January 2, 2005 -- DTO Music - Salsa Topic

I'm really concern "some times" when i see people that may look "clever" ? but they are full of wrong information that will evntually lead them to spread false information about this topic "Salsa" this one is for Milton Valentin.... :-)

I see so many mistakes in your coments that while Im reading my face turn into OHHHH MY GOD !!! first saying that "Salsa" is Puerto Rican .. you may be right SALSA IS AS PUERTO RICAN AS YOUR FLAG and then comes the song "que bonita bandera es la bandera Puerto Riqueña" :-)

Milton just because Japan invented the Karate means that was crated from a top of a tree... everybody knows that Kung Fu is the real deal and China was the melting pot with ingridients from India ...."a buen entenderoe con pocas palabras"

I was born in a very special city in Cuba "Santiago of Cuba" if some day you want to know what Cuba and its very rich cultural history is you go there so you learn like the Puerto Rican musicians leared from the Cubans like Dizzie did and was fascinated with our rich and vast musical heritage,

Puerto Rico is the birthplace of Plena and Bomba from there stop and learn,Puerto Ricans adopt Cuban music and Dominican music because their own rythems are no popular and well like the flag "need to copy" and there we go .. but you are not the only ones ...ones in Mexico was said that tha Bolero was from there what would Pepe Sanchez said about this ??

Cubans first came to New York to play their music like Machito's in the 30's Cubans would not evolve the Cuban Popular dancing music from Miami of course because Cubans moved to Miami maily after 1959 but some 30 years before they where performing in New York.... there is another Boricua aou there inviting people to go to Puerto Rico to learn how to play the Drums... :-) He has to go himself to Santiago and visit Los Cabildos Africanos and then he will understand that he's jus lying to himself let "Paso Franco" "San Agustin" "Los Hoyos" "Alto Pino" etc etc break the cueros and then will see .. Tata Wines, Mongo Santamaria etc etc let Jesus Alemañys and " Cubanismo" sonar the real deal and forget abot "cara de niño cuerpo de hombre" and all this babadas..........

"SALSA IS AS PUERTO RICAN AS YOUR FLAG" PD: "Puerto Ricans helped to spread Cuban Popular dancing muscic in EEUU but never ever created a bit of thesse rythems" -- Juan Carlos

January 2, 2005 -- Where to Salsa in Cuba?

Hi Rose, My fiance and I are going to Cuba next January for our wedding and honeymoon. We are both salsa dancers and would love to go either to Havana or Varadero (both of which are an hour away from the resort we'll be at) to get our dance fix. Do you or anyone else at TOSalsa have any suggestions for us? Thanks, Karen

January 1, 2005 --

Hithere and happy new year i want to ask you something about Salsa Lifts how partnering do to make lift that the man lift the girl by one leg from the thigh. -- Luis

Dear Luis, Happy New Year and it sounds like you would like to do a specific trick or lift. This is not something that can be explained on the net and you could hurt your dance partner if you don't know what you're doing -- I strongly suggest you go and take a lesson with an instructor who knows lifts and tricks.
